    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing cyclopentanone by reacting adipic esters of formula (I) R1OOC-(CH2)4-COOR2 in which R1 and R2 represent alkyl radicals having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl radicals having 5 or 6 carbon atoms, alkyl aryl or aryl radicals, and R2 can represent additional hydrogen, in the presence of oxidic catalysts. According to the inventive method, adipic esters of formula (I) are reacted with less than 5 wt.% of secondary products, said products not being adipic esters in the gas phase when in the presence of water, with a carrier gas, and a) 0.01 to 10 wt.% of at least one metal oxide, selected from the first or second main group of the periodic table or from the group of rare-earth metals, is reacted on titanium oxide or zirconium dioxide acting as a catalyst support, or b) 0.01 to 50 wt.% of at least one metal oxide, selected from the second main group of the periodic table, is reacted on zinc oxide acting as a catalyst support.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing 1,6-hexanediol and 6hydroxycaproic acid or their esters by the catalytic hydrogenation of adipic acid, adipic acid monoesters or adipic acid diesters or educt flows containing adipic acid or its esters as essential constituents. The bottom product obtained when the hydrogenation discharge is distilled after the hexanediol and the hydroxycaproic acid or its esters have been separated off is reintroduced into the hydrogenation process, said bottom product essentially containing oligomeric esters of the 6-hydroxycaproic acid. The resulting mixture of the educt and the return flow is reacted at temperatures of 100 to 300 ~C and at pressures of 10 to 300 bar in the liquid phase and with a molar ratio of carboxyl groups to be hydrogenated to hydrogen in the reactor of 1:5 to 1:100, on hydrogenating catalysts.
