    Abstract: Water-soluble polymers having K values of from 5 to 100 (determined on the Na salt of the polymers according to H. Fikentscher in aqueous solution at 25.degree.C, a pH of 7 and a concentration of 1% by weight of the Na salt of the polymer) are prepared by polymerizing a monomer mixture of (a) monoethylenically unsaturated C3-C5-monocarboxylic acids and (b) more than 20-100 mol % of monomers which have two or more ethylenically unsaturated double bonds linked via one or more ester or amide functions and which contain one or more -CO-OX groups, where X is one hydrogen equivalent, one alkali metal equivalent or one alkaline earth metal equivalent or an ammonium group, in aqueous solution in the presence of a polymerization initiator, and the polymers are used in amounts of from 0.5 to 25% by weight in detergents and cleaners.

    Abstract: Water-in-oil emulsions of water-soluble or water-swellable polymers, in which the oil phase of the emulsion consists of not less than 50% by weight of an oil of vegetable or animal origin, contain, as water-in-oil emulsifiers, compounds which are obtainable by (A) reacting a C10-C22-fatty alcohol with epichlorohydrin in a molar ratio of from 1:0.5 to 1:1.5 to give a glycidyl ether, (B) reacting the glycidyl ether with (1) a saturated C2-C6-alcohol containing from 2 to 6 OH groups or (2) the monoether thereof with a C10-C22-fatty alcohol, in a molar ratio of glycidyl ether to (1) or (2) of from 1:0.5 to 1:6, in the presence of an acid or base and (C) alkoxylating the reaction product from (B) with one or more C2-C4-alkylene oxides in a molar ratio of from 1:1 to 1:6, if necessary, from 5 to 95% by weight of the stated water-in-oil emulsifier being replaced with other water-in-oil emulsifiers.

    Abstract: Graft copolymers obtainable by free radical-initiated copolymerization of (A) a monomer mixture comprising (a) a monoethylenically unsaturated C4- to C8-dicarboxylic acid, or an anhydride, alkali metal salt or ammonium salt thereof, (b) a monoethylenically unsaturated C3- to C10-carboxylic acid, or an alkali metal salt or ammonium salt thereof, (c) if desired another monoethylenically unsaturated monomer which can be copolymerized with monomer (a) and (b), and (d) a monomer containing two or more ethylenically unsaturated, non-conjugated double bonds in the molecule, in the presence of (B) a monosaccharide, oligosaccharide, polysaccharide, oxidatively, hydrolytically or enzymatically degraded polysaccharide, oxidized, hydrolytically or enzymatically degraded polysaccharide, or chemically modified monosaccharide, oligosaccharide or polysaccharide, in the weight ratio (A):(B) of (95 to 20):(5 to 80), a process for the preparation of the graft copolymers, and detergents and cleaners containing the graft copolymers in amounts of from 0.1 to 20% by weight, are described.

    Abstract: Petroleum distillates with improved properties contain minor amts. of a conventional ethylene-based flow improver (I) and a copolymer (II) comprising 10-95 mol.% of one or more 1-26C alkyl (meth)acrylates and 5-90 mol.% of one or more ethylenically unsatd. dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides, post-reacted with one or more primary or sec. amines to form the corresp. monoamide or amide/ammonium salt. (I):(II) wt. ratio is 40-95:60-5. - Pref. (I) is a copolymer of ethylene with vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate or ethylhexyl acrylate. (II) is a copolymer of 40-95% lauryl acrylate or 8-18C alkyl acrylate and 5-60% maleic anhydride, post-reacted with di(hydrogenated tallow) amine (DHTA), behenylamine or n-octadecylamine. (II) is opt. grafted onto (I). The distillates contain 50-5,000 ppm (I)+(II).
