Abstract: The present invention is a method for extending a cell radius or access range of a base station without incurring ASIC correlator re-design. This is accomplished using a modified timing protocol that will cause signals transmitted by mobile-telephones positioned beyond the limitations of the ASIC correlator bit limitation to be received within a search window so the signals may be detected and demodulated. In one embodiment, the modified timing protocol incorporates a timing advance technique in which the base station transmits its signals at an advanced time before frame boundaries such that signals transmitted by out-of-range mobile-telephones can be received within a search window beginning at a frame boundary and spanning a time interval corresponding to the ASIC correlator bit limitation. In another embodiment, the modified timing protocol incorporates a shifted search window that begins at an advanced time after a frame boundary and spans a time interval corresponding to the ASIC correlator bit limitation.

Abstract: The present invention is a method for efficiently utilizing spectrum resources belonging to a wireless communications system in the presence of data channels through a discontinuous data transmission technique. The discontinuous data transmission technique involves the transmission of a flag over a control channel (or some other communication channel) in frame f, wherein the flag would indicate to an intended recipient that a transmitter has a data frame to transmit to the recipient in some future frame f+q. In an embodiment, the transmitter would subsequently transmit the data frame over a data channel (or some other communication channel) in frame f+q if the flag indicated that the data frame was ready to be transmitted. In another embodiment, the transmitter would not transmit the data frame unless the recipient has indicated (via another flag) that the recipient is ready to receive the frame of data from the transmitter.

Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus and method for calculating the transmit power of a mobile station by including an interference correction term in every access probe of the mobile station to more correctly estimate the path loss. The interference correction term accounts for the presence of base station pilot signals when calculating the transmit power. Importantly, the present invention is implementable in any CDMA based communication system. In an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, a mobile station implements open loop power control by determining an interference correction term that accounts for the detection of non-active-set pilot signals, thermal noise, or non-CDMA interference, one or more of which are indicated by the detection of a given receive threshold. The mobile station then adjusts its open loop transmit power (access probe power in access state) based on the interference correction term. In a further embodiment, the interference correction term is limited to a maximum level of correction for the case when an active pilot is not detected. In an additional embodiment, the nonactive-set pilot power is approximated to all received pilots other than the largest activeset pilot.

Abstract: The present invention increases the success rate of soft handoffs by enhancing the ability of a mobile-telephone to receive a handoff direction messa ge that identifies the traffic channel being assigned to enable a candidate base station to communicate with the mobile-telephone. Specifically, the aforementioned ability of the mobile-telephone is enhanced by using the candidate base station to transmit the handoff direction message on a communication channel belonging to the candidate base sta tion and being listened to by the mobile-telehone. In situations where signals transm itted from active set base stations have a low signal-to-noise ratio at the mobile-tel ephone, signals transmitted from the candidate base station may have a higher signal-to-noise ratio at the mobile-telephone. In these situations, the transmission of the HD m essages from the candidate base station increases the likelihood that a copy of the hand off direction message will be successfully received by the mobile-telephone, thereby enhancing the success rate of soft handoffs.

Abstract: In order to effectively terminate a burst transmission in a wireless system, a method and apparatus determines whether or not a burst transmission from a wireless unit to a base station should be terminated by evaluating at least one criterion related to the operation of the wireless system. Once it is determined that a burst transmission should be terminated, the transmission is terminated by lowering a target signal -to-noise ratio (SIR) by a predetermined amount. By lowering this target SIR, power control bits transmitted from the base station to the wireless unit instruct an extreme decrease in power of the burst transmission and quickly act to terminate the burst transmission.

Abstract: A method that changes the power level of a set of forward-link signals, independent of the individual power control of each of the forward-link signals in the set, responsive to a comparison of the signal set's power level and a threshold power level (P th ). The threshold power level (P th) is based on the base station's (200, 400) amplifier's (15 0) maximum threshold power level. The power level of the set is changed by scaling it by a scalin g factor. The total power level (P[n-1]) of the set is obtained during a current frame, and then the scaling factor (g[n]) that will be used in the subsequent frame is determined. The scaling factor (g[n]) is preferably based on the total power level (P[n-1]) of the set for the curren t frame, a scaling factor (g[n-1]) used during the current frame, and a threshold power level ( P th). The amount by which the total power level exceeds the amplifier's maximum continuous power level is the overload amount. The scaling factor is selected so that for each frame the overload amount is reduced by a percentage. For example, the overload amount can be reduced by 3% for the current frame, then the percentage may be changed for a subsequent frame based on th e scaling factor of the current time period and the overload amount of the subsequent time perio d. The set caninclude all of the signals amplified by the base station's amplif ier (150); alternatively, the set can include fewer than all the signals generated by the base station. For example, the set can include a plurality of the traffic signals, or a plurality of the traffic signals and one or more of the control signals. When the base station includes a plurality of amplifier s, each for amplifying a set of signals, the above process can be performed for each of the sets of signals.
