Abstract: A FIRST REMOTE VOCODER RECEIVES ANALOG VOICE AND PRODUCES PACKETIZED VOCODER DATA WHICH IS TRANSMITTED OVER A WIRELESS LINK. A FIRST LOCAL VOCODER RECEIVES THE PACKETIZED VOCODER DATA FROM THE WIRELESS LINK. THE FIRST LOCAL VOCODER CONVERTS THE PACKETIZED DATA TO A MULTIBIT PCM OUTPUT. THE FIRST LOCAL VOCODER ALSO ADDS A DETECTION CODE TO ONE OF THE LEAST SIGNIFICANT BITS (LSB) OF THE PCM OUTPUT. THE FIRST LOCAL VOCODER PASSES THE PCM SIGNAL TO THE PSTN FROM THE SECOND END USER. THE FIRST LOCAL VOCODER ALSO RECEIVES PCM INPUT OVER THE PSTN. THE FIRST LOCAL VOCODER CONSTANTLY MONITORS THE LEAST SIGNIFICANT BIT OF THE PCM INPUT FOR A DETECTION CODE INDICATING THAT A SECOND LOCAL VOCODER IS CONNECTED AT THE RECEIVING END. IF THE FIRST LOCAL VOCODER DETECTS THE DETECTION CODE FROM THE SECOND LOCAL VOCODER, IT BEGINS TO SUBSTITUTE PACKETIZED DATA AND A REDUNDANCY CHECK FOR A SECOND ONE OF THE LSB''S OF THE OUTGOING PCM. THE FIRST LOCAL VOCODER ALSO BEGINS TO MONITOR THE SECOND ONE OF THE LSB''C OF THE INCOMING PCM. IF THE REDUNDANCY CHECK INDICATES THAT VALID PACKETIZED DATA HAS BEEN RECEIVED, THE FIRST LOCAL VOCODER STOPS CONVERTING THE PCM OUTPUT INTO PACKETIZED DATA AND SIMPLY PASSES THE PACKETIZED DATA ON THE SECOND ONE OF THE LSB''S TO THE FIRST REMOTE VOCODER. IF AT ANY TIME THE REDUNDANCY CHECK FAILS AND THE DETECTION CODE IS NOT DETECTED, THE FIRST LOCAL VOCODER RETURNS TO CONVERTING THE INCOMING PCM TO PACKETIZED DATA. IN THIS WAY, THE TANDEM VOCODING ARRANGEMENT IS AVOIDED.

Abstract: In a method for minimizing a data bottleneck in a Low Data Rate Network (LDRN) (34), i.e. a facsimile network having a transmission rate less than the data rate of the facsimile machines serviced by the network, the LDRN (34) has a one-dimensional image data format and a two-dimensional image data format. The method comprises processing the facsimile transmissions in order to make the data rates of the LDRN and the FAX machines compatible, thereby minimizing any potential facsimile data bottlenecks that may occur in the LDRN due to its slower data rate. In the method, a first facsimile (FAX) machine (12) is set to the one-dimensional image data format; a data stream encoded in the one-dimensional image data format is sent (32) from the first FAX machine (12) to a first side of the LDRN (34); the data stream sent is uncompressed, and the uncompressed data stream is re-encoded into the two-dimensional image data format; the re-encoded data stream is transmitted from the first side of the LDRN (34) to a second side of the LDRN (34); the transmitted data stream is second uncompressed; the second uncompressed data stream is second re-encoded into the one-dimensional image data format; and the re-encoded data stream is second sent (36) from the second side of the LDRN (34) to a second FAX machine (16).

Abstract: Systems, methods, and programs for activating a feature (310) on a wireless device (300) are described. In one design, the wireless device (300) receives a request to activate the feature (310) associated with the wireless device (300), wherein the feature activation request is initiated by an application executed on the wireless device (300). A feature (310) includes additional functions and services that add capability to or accessed by the wireless device (300), such as, but not limited to, voice mail, voice recognition, access to GPS, MPEG functions, and access to a data channel or increased data rates. The wireless device (300) executes a component (305) on the wireless device (300), the component (305) having logic operable to configure the wireless device (300) to access the feature (310). The wireless device (300) then activates the feature (310).

Abstract: A cellular telephone concentrated subscriber system is described. The concentrated subscriber system includes a set of subscriber units coupled to a concentrated subscriber system controller. The concentrated subscriber system controller that provides a radio frequency (RF) interface to the standard base station transceiver of a cellular telephone system. Each subscriber unit has a unique electronic serial number. The concentrated subscriber system controller includes a set of modulator-demodulator systems (modems) and a RF transceiver and antenna system that is configured to transmit sufficient information to conduct multiple telephone calls over both long and short distances. The concentrated subscriber system controller also includes control circuitry for coupling the set of subscriber unit to the set of modems via a multiplexed system using stored information. In the preferred embodiment the number of modems is significantly less the number of subscriber units which are implemented in a simplified manner so that the per user cost of cellular telephone service is reduced.
