    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a whitening agent consisting of a spiroether compound and having action suppressing melanogenesis and decreasing and diminishing melanogenesis after irradiation of ultraviolet rays and to obtain a skin external preparation containing the whitening agent. CONSTITUTION:This whitening agent contains a spiroether compound expressed by the formula (the wavy line represents that the binding state may be either one of Z or E). This skin external preparation is prepared by blending a compound of the formula in an amount of 0.000001 to 10wt.%, preferably 0.00001-5wt.%. The compound of the formula has action suppressing melanogenesis and decreasing or diminishing melanization produced by irritation of ultraviolet rays and the skin external preparation obtained by blending the compound has excellent whitening effect and preventing and treating effect on stain and ephelis due to sunburn, etc., and the preparation has high safety. The compound of the formula is obtained by extracting from a plant of the genus Matricaria of the family Compositae, e.g. chamomile. The skin external preparation can be prepared in a formulation such as cream, milk lotion, toilet lotion, foundation, pack, lotion, gel, solution or stick.
