Abstract: A method of dubbing compressed digital video signals (32) adopted for an apparatus (1-15) for efficient coding and subsequent recording/playback of video signals. In the method of dubbing compressed digital video signals, on a playback unit side (8-15), after padding error data by an error processing circuit with respect to an error uncorrectable in error correction by an ECC circuit (10) of playback, the digital video signal is provided with a parity for transmission by a parity generating circuit (6) and is then transmitted to a recording unit side (1-7). On the other hand, on the recording unit side (1-7), after padding error data by an error processing circuit with respect to an error uncorrectable in error correction by an ECC circuit (10) of transmission, the digital video signal is provided with a parity for recording by a parity generator (6) and is then recorded in a recording medium.

Abstract: One node is selected from a plurality of candidates for a bus management nod e. A bus management node 11 has a register for channels in use REG 1 and a bus capacity register REG2. Before starting the synchronous communication, each node 12 transmits a read-out command to the register for channels in use REG 1 and t he register for channels in use REG1 in order to read out their contents for ascertainin g the number of the un-used channel and the residual capacity. If there is any un- used channel and any residual bus capacity, the node 12 transmits write commands to these registers REG 1 and REG2 so that the number of the channel to be in us e and the capacity of the bus to be in use will be stored in the register for channels in use REG 1 and the bus capacity register REG2. This enables bus management to be achiev ed easily in a system performing synchronous communication between plural nodes connected to the bus.

Abstract: A hash function and a service key are stored in advance in an EEPROM of a DVD player serving as a source. In an EEPROM of a personal computer (PC) serving as a sink, on the other hand, its ID and a license key are stored beforehand. The DVD player requests the PC to transmit the ID. The DVD player then applies the hash function to data resulting from concatenation of the ID with the service key to generate a license key (= hash (ID || service key)). Subsequently, the DVD player generates a source side session key and encrypts the session key by using the generated license key. Then, the DVD player transmits the encrypted source side session key to the PC. The PC decrypts the encrypted source side session key by using the license key stored in its EEPROM to produce a sink side session key which has a value equal to that of the source side session key.

Abstract: An enciphering/deciphering apparatus and method are provided by which illegal copying can be prevented with a greater degree of certainty. Data enciphered by a 1394 interface (26) of a DVD player (1) is transmitted to a personal computer (2) and a magneto-optical disk apparatus (3) through a 1394 bus (11). In the magneto-optical disk apparatus (3) with which a change to a function is not open to a user, the received data is deciphered by a 1394 interface (36). In contrast, in the personal computer (2) with which a change to a function is open to a user, the enciphered data is deciphered using a time variable key (50) by a 1394 interface (49), and a result of the decipherment is further deciphered using a session key by an application section.

Abstract: Data to be transmitted via a serial bus (5) in conformity with the IEEE 1394 protocol are ciphered by a ciphering/deciphering circuit (24), and headers are attached thereto by a header sync detecting/generating circuit (23). After further attachment of a CRC code by a CRC detector/generator (33), the data are packetized into isochronous packets of an isochronous mode by a transmission/reception switching circuit (21), whereby transmission of the data can be performed with enhanced security. Out of the cipher keys employed, a session key invariable in each session of the data is transmitted in each packet of an asynchronous mode, and a time variable key updated in each session is transmitted in each packet of an isochronous mode. The ciphered data obtained by depacketizing the packets of the isochronous mode are deciphered, so that the data transmitted with security can be deciphered exactly, and thus illegal use of the data can be prevented.

Abstract: A communications system comprises items of equipment connected via a bus capable of transferring combinations of control signals and AV signals as packets while providing an environment which is the same as an environment where connections are made using analog signal lines. A register decided by an address is taken to be a virtual plug for each item of equipment. A plug enable for an input plug is set to 1 and a synchronous communication packet for the AV signal from the channel set by the channel number is received. A plug enable for an output plug is set to one and the synchronous communication packet for the information signal is sent to the channel set by the channel number at a transmission speed designated by the DR (Data Rate) at the bandwidth expressed by "Bandwidth".
