Abstract: A method that adjusts the power level of a set of forward-link signals of a base station responsive to the loading of the forward link as determined by a power level measurement of the signal set. One power level measurement is a pilot fraction of the forward link. Other power level measurements, such as the signal set's power level, can be used, alone or in combination, instead of o r in addition to the pilot fraction of the forward link to adjust the power level of the signal set. The power level of the signal set can be changed in any manner, including by scaling it by a scaling factor, or by increasing the power leve l by a fixed or a variable amount. The power level measurement of the signal set is obtained during a current time period. The scaling factor that will be used in the subsequent time period is determined using the power level measurement. In one embodiment of the invention, the scaling factor can be obtained from a look-up table that is based on the power level measurement. If the cell containing the base station includes several sectors, the power level of the signal set in a sector is adjusted when the power level measurement in that sector indicates that t he power level should be adjusted.

Abstract: A system and method have been developed wherein a cylindrical antenna array is configured and reconfigured in a wireless communication network. Position and signal information are continuously received from wireless mobile units and are used to determine reconfigurations of antenna components of the cylindrical antenna array to enhance performance of the system. As such, base station antennas are dynamically configured to minimize such things as interference and dropped calls, and to maximize their voice quality both within a cell, and among neighboring cells.

Abstract: A base station assembles a frame including information bits at a vocoding rate for downlink transmission over a traffic channel as channel bits at a channel rate. The base station places at least one rate-indicating bit at a beginning of the frame for indicating the vocoding rate. The mobile station evaluates the downlink transmission with consideration of the vocoding rate indicated by the at least one rate-indicating bit. The mobile station can determine the vocoding rate by decoding the beginning of the frame to permit power control in less than one frame duration from initial receipt of the frame at the mobile station.

Abstract: A method of controlling the power in a wireless communication system (200). In one embodiment of the invention, a base station (210) determines the information rate of a signal to be transmitted (270) to a mobile station (220), and obtains the variable power control scaling factor (245) based on this information rate. The base station (210) then transmits the variable power control scaling factor (245) to the mobile station (220). The mobile station (220) determines a target signal quality measurement (130) for a received signal (270) from the base station (220), such as a target E b/N0 (130), and scales the target E b/N0 (130) by the variable power control scaling factor (245). The mobile station (220) also obtains an information rate scaling factor based on the information rate of the received signal (270), and further scales the target E b/N0 by this information rate scaling factor. The mobile station (220) then compares the target E b/N0 (130) to a measured E b/N0 (160) of the received signal (270). An increase in power of the received signal (270) is requested when the measured E b/N0 (160) of the received signal (270) is smaller than the scaled E b/N0 (260). A decrease in power of the received signal (270) is requested when the measured E b/N0 (160) of the received signal (270) is larger than the scaled E b/N0 (260). Providing the variable power control scaling factor (245) to the mobile station (220) allows frames having an information rate lower than the full rate to be transmitted at a power even lower than the power of a frame having an information rate equal to the full rate times the information scaling factor.

Abstract: A procedure for triggering a handdown or a handoff a mobile station served by a base station of a cellular wireless communication system. A tolerable path loss for signal links between the base station and a mobile station located within the base station's cell, is initially determined. A control signal is radiated at a known transmit power level from the base station over its cell. A receive power level threshold is determined for the control signal for reception by the mobile station, according to the transmit power level and the tolerable path loss. A handoff of the mobile station is triggered after deriving the received power level of the control signal at the mobile station, and determining that the received power level is less than the receive power level threshold. In one embodiment, a mobile station reports to a serving base station only after the former determines that the received power level of a control signal from the base station is less than a threshold level initially provided to the mobile station by the base station. The procedure is applicable, e.g., to base station cells of a first CDMA cellular system which cells border on cells of an analog (AMPS) or a second CDMA cellular system.
