Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a water-soluble copolymer of at least one kind of water-soluble N-vinyl lactam and at least one kind of hydrophobic comonomer by the radical polymerization of the monomers in an organic solvent. SOLUTION: A vinyl lactam copolymer is produced by the radical polymerization of at least one kind of water-soluble N-vinyl lactam and at least one kind of hydrophobic comonomer in an organic solvent in the presence of an initiator under refluxing condition. In the above method, at least 10 mol% of the N-vinyl lactam is added to the polymerization mixture when at least 90 mol% of the hydrophobic monomer is completely reacted. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT

Abstract:
Free-radical polymerization of at least one of water-soluble N-vinyl lactam and at least one of hydrophobic comonomer, is carried out in an organic solvent, in presence of initiator under reflux conditions, such that at least 10 mol% of N-vinyl lactam is added to polymerization mixture after at least 90 mol% of hydrophobic monomer is completely reacted. Thus, a vinyl lactam copolymer is produced.
