    Abstract: Disclosed is a method for producing benzophenones of formula I, wherein X can represent chlorine, hydroxy, methoxy, or C1-C6 alkylcarbonyloxy while Y represents chlorine or bromine, by reacting an acid chloride of formula II, wherein X and Y have the meaning mentioned above, with 3,4,5-trimethoxytoluene. The inventive method is characterized by that the reaction is carried out in the presence of a) an aromatic hydrocarbon as a thinner, and b) 0.01 to 0.2 mole percent of an iron catalyst, the percentage being in relation to the acid chloride, c)at a temperature ranging between 60 DEGREE C and the boiling point of the respective thinner. , I , II
