Abstract: An instrument 100 for biological analysis, comprising an excitation source 402 , an optical sensor 490 configured to receive emissions from one or more biological samples 310 in response to the excitation source, an excitation optical system disposed along an excitation optical path and an emission optical system disposed along an emission optical path. The optical sensor is configured to receive emissions from the biological samples in response to the excitation source. A cover 102 is disposed in the excitation path immediately adjacent to the sample, the cover comprising a surface which is illuminated by the excitation light and which reflects radiation from the excitation source. A radiation shield 475 including a sensor aperture 478 disposed along an emission optical path and a blocking structure 480 disposed to cooperate with the sensor aperture, whereby the radiation shield ensures that only radiation which is reflected by the illuminated surface and which is also additionally reflected by another surface of the instrument housing is able to reach the optical sensor.

Abstract: In one aspect, a thermal cycler system is disclosed. The thermal cycler can be comprised of a device housing and a cover that is operably connected to the device housing. The cover can include a handle portion, a device lid portion, a sample block platen, and a link bar. The device lid portion is attached to the proximal side of the handle portion with a first pin. The sample block platen is operably connected to the handle portion such that the sample block platen is positioned against the sample block when the handle portion is flush with the device lid portion and the cover is in a closed position. The link bar is pivotably connected to the device housing at a first terminal end portion and a second pin at an opposite second terminal end portion, wherein the handle portion is elevated away from the device lid portion before the cover is moved to an open position.

Abstract: Systems and Methods for Assessing Biological Samples of the Disclosure An instrument for biological analysis includes a base, an excitation source, an optical sensor, an excitation optical system, and an emission optical system. The base is configured to receive a sample holder comprising a plurality of biological samples. The optical sensor is configured to receive emissions from the biological samples in response to the excitation source. The instrument may additionally include a sensor lens enclosed by a lens case and a focusing mechanism including a gear that engages the lens case, the focusing mechanism being accessible outside the enclosure for adjusting a focus. The may instrument further include a sensor aperture dispose along an emission optical path and a blocking structure disposed to cooperate with the sensor aperture such that none of the reflected radiation from an illuminated surface near the sample holder is received by the optical sensor that does not also reflect off another surface of the instrument. In various embodiments the thermal control unit also includes an electrical interface portion configured to connect the thermoelectric device with the electrical current source by way of an electrical cable. In various embodiments the thermal control unit is oriented in a different plane than the sample block and thermoelectric cooler.
