    Abstract: PURPOSE: To reduce the size and weight of a scanning head by constituting an optical reader of an optical scanning head, a separate device and an optical fiber and by providing the separate device with a light emitting element, a photodetector and a signal analysis circuit network. CONSTITUTION: This reader 100 is composed of the scanning head 110 and the separate device 130 connected with each other by the optical fiber 150. In the separate device 130, the light emitting element 133 for generating light beams to be used for scanning optical coded information and the other components are contained. Also, the photodetector 117 is provided inside the scanning head 110 and the photodetector 117 can be installed in the separate device 130 as well. In that case, reflected light is sent back from the scanning head 110 to the photodetector inside the separate device 130 by the optical fiber 150. Further, in a processing circuit net 149 inside the separate device 130, an amplification stage and a digitizer, etc., for processing electric signals from the photodetector 117 and an AC driving signal generator 147 for driving a coil 115 are contained.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a compact bar code scanner which can operate scanning in one of several modes by including a double resonance structure which generates a (y) vertical scanning motion with either a high frequency or a low frequency. CONSTITUTION: A light beam from a proper source such as a visible laser diode(VLD) 26 is introduced to a high speed horizontal (x) deflection array 28 in which the (x) scanning deflection of the beam is operated at a high speed at first. The obtained (x) scanning beam is introduced to a vertical (y) deflection array 30 in which the vertical scanning deflection of the beam is operated at a low speed or a high speed, and raster and full directional scanning patterns are generated, or the vertical scanning deflection is not operated. The array 30 includes a flexible base having two degree of mechanical freedom for providing two resonating states, that is, low frequency (y) scanning for the raster pattern, and high frequency (y) scanning for the full directional pattern. Also, the array 30 is driven by an electromagnetic force generated by a coil 44 surrounding a permanent magnet 42 fixed to the array 30.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve the decoding reliability, read speed, and the degree of freedom of the direction of a bar code reader for linear and two-dimensional bar code symbols by using a piezoelectric bimorph element as the driving element of the optical system of the bar code reader. CONSTITUTION: In several practical examples, a piezoelectric bimorph element 28 is used for the scanning function of the reader or the varifocal zoom function of an optical system. In several practical examples, >=1 piezoelectric bimorph element 28 fitted having one end fixed supports an assembly of a scanning mirror, a focusing lens, a laser diode, or the laser diode 20 and a limit aperture 24 at its free end, and drives them to make the reader scan. Further, the beam deflector for the bar code reader optical system controls the varifocal zoom lens system of the reader by >=1 piezoelectric bimorph element having one end fixed.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a high-speed scanning mechanism for the scanner which reads a bar code symbol by swinging a scanning element according to a uniaxial scanning pattern or multiaxial scanning pattern. CONSTITUTION: The light beam emitted by a light source travels through a window 18 along an optical path and impinges on a display to be read, e.g. the bar code symbol. In the scanner 10, an optical detector which has a view area for collecting reflected light returning from the symbol through the window 18, e.g. a photodiode is arranged. The scanning element arranged in the scanner 10 operates to scan the symbol and/or the view area of the optical detector. The scanning element is a light reflector which is arranged in the emission and/or return path and the light reflector is swung by an electric operation type driving means at a specific frequency alternately in the circumferential direction.
