    Abstract: The invention comprises an atomizing spray nozzle containing multiple restrictions to the flow of an air and water mixture through the nozzle created by contours in the stem in relation to the orifice and having a whirl chamber in the nozzle body where injected air induces disturbances in the liquid to create effective atomization prior to the first restriction which creates a negative pressure beyond the restriction and which is repeated at additional restrictions thus resulting in a repeated depressurization and sudden expansion to obtain a finely atomized mixture before reaching the orifice, with a final restriction at an outlet that may take the form for a flat spray or one for a narrow round spray.

    Abstract: A liquid adhesive dispensing system operable for more uniformly applying liquid adhesive foam onto moving substrates, notwithstanding changes in line speed, adhesive liquid flow rates, or foaming/atomizing air pressures. The illustrated liquid adhesive system includes a header having a plurality of air atomizing spray guns; the spray guns each having a respective variable speed positive displacement pump for directing a metered quantity of liquid adhesive from a liquid adhesive supply to the respective spray gun; and a control for controlling the operating speed of the positive displacement pumps in relation to the speed of the moving substrate and the foaming/atomizing air pressure to the spray guns in relation to the operating speed of the positive displacement pumps. The control further is operable for monitoring pressures across the positive displacement pumps for insuring the accurate direction of metered quantities of liquid to the spray guns. The spray guns are adapted for enhanced liquid adhesive foaming and atomization, and the header is convertible into a closed housing structure effective for containing cleaning and purge liquids during an automatically operable cleaning cycle of operation.

    Abstract: An external mix air atomizing spray nozzle assembly comprising a nozzle body having liquid and air flow passages, and an air cap formed with an air chamber communicating with said air passage and a plurality of angled pressurized air discharge passages communicating with said chamber at an angle to a central axis of said spray nozzle assembly for directing pressurized air onto a liquid flow stream discharging from said liquid passage. The angled air discharge passages each are defined by a conical indentation in a front face of the air cap and a cylindrical bore communicating in perpendicular relation to a side surface of the conical indentation. The design of the angled air discharge passages permits easy manufacture and design modification for particular spray applications.

    Abstract: A low pressure blower operated airknife having a housing with an elongated primary air discharge orifice for directing a narrow width curtain of air. The airknife includes an air-augmenting shroud which defines auxiliary discharge orifices on opposite longitudinal sides of the primary air discharge orifice such that air discharging from the primary discharge orifice creates a low pressure condition adjacent the auxiliary air discharge orifices for drawing additional air through the auxiliary discharge orifices which augments the velocity and volume of the discharging air current without the necessity for increasing the air inlet pressure or blower size. The shroud may take alternative forms, including pairs of wings disposed on opposite sides of the primary discharge orifice or hollow structures that surround the airknife housing. The airknife further is adapted for low pressure direction and application of air laden particles, such as preatomized liquid particles.

    Abstract: A spray nozzle in which a nozzle body is formed with an elongated chamber having an air inlet port communicating with the side of the chamber, a liquid inlet port communicating with one end of the chamber, and a nozzle tip communicating with the opposite end of the chamber. The spray nozzle may be operated in a hydraulic or non-air assisted mode and with a relatively high flow rate by closing off the air inlet port and causing liquid to stream directly from the liquid inlet port to the nozzle tip. The nozzle also may be converted to an air assisted mode in which a stream of pressurized air is injected into the air inlet port and impinges transversely against the liquid stream to preliminarily break up or preatomize the liquid before the liquid is discharged from the nozzle tip. The conversion is effected by placing into the nozzle body an insert for reducing the flow rate of the liquid stream and for causing the air and liquid streams to interact to effect preatomization of the liquid.
