Abstract:
A color-shifting paint comprising a polymeric paint medium and a plurality of colored interference thin film platelets dispersed in the paint medium. Each platelet being characterized in that platelets has first and second generally planar outer surfaces and an edge thickness perpendicular to the first and second generally planar outer surfaces. Each platelet is comprised of a metal reflecting layer having first and second surfaces. A multilayer interference structure is disposed on each of the first and second surfaces of the metal reflecting layer to provide a symmetrical platelet. The multilayer interference thin film structure comprises a pair of layer consisting of a dielectric layer formed of a dielectric material and a semi-opaque layer. with the dielectric layer directly adjacent to the metal reflecting layer. The thickness of the dielectric layer determines the color and the dielectric material determines the degree of color shift. The platelets have an aspect ratio of at least 2:1 for the longest planar dimension of the first and second outer surfaces in comparison to the edge thickness of the platelets, and have a maximum dimension on any of said surfaces ranging from 2-200 microns.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for applying pressure sensitive adhesive to a substrate, in which the adhesive is deposited on a transfer surface, such as a circulating transfer belt, dried, and subsequently transferred to a plurality of overlapping sheets. The sheets are preferably coated with a primer or a low adhesion backsize, or both, prior to application of the adhesive.
Abstract:
A process for the selective metallization of a substrate and the product formed thereby. An extremely thin (substantially less than the wavelength of light) coat of metallic particles is deposited on a transfer agent. A thin coat of varnish is selectively applied to either the substrate or the transfer agent, the substrate and the transfer agent are laminated together and the varnish is cured. The metallic particles will become absorbed within the varnish and the substrate and transfer agent are then separated. The substrate is provided with a highly polished specular metallic finish in predetermined areas.

Abstract:
Articles and methods for forming optically variable thin film flakes and replicated coatings having preselected optical properties. The articles generally comprise a flexible web of material and an optically variable thin film coating formed on one surface of the web. The optically variable coating is separated from the web to form optically variable thin film flakes. The flakes are disposed in ink and paint vehicles to provide optically variable inks, paints and the like.
Abstract:
An article adapted to be utilized in the production of optically variable ink comprised of a flexible insoluble web, a release lever formed on the web and an optically variable multilayer thin film interference stack disposed on the release layer and which provides a color shift between two predetermined uniform colors. The interference stack includes an opaque reflective layer which has first and second surfaces and at least one period on each said first and second surfaces to provide the same color shift from each of said first and second surfaces between said two predetermined uniform colors at two different angles of incident light. Each period is comprised of a dielectric layer and a semi-opaque layer.
Abstract:
The invention also relates to a process for dressing a flat, water-absorbing and water-permeable substrate having a rough surface with depressions at least on that side to be provided with the dressing.
Abstract:
A protective and decorative, stretchable, thermoplastic sheet material for bonding by thermoforming to automobile body panels and other articles which comprises a polyester carrier film coated with an aqueous polyurethane paint composition. To aid in the adhesion of the paint, the carrier film is coated with a tie coat composition comprising a self-crosslinking, aqueous polyurethane dispersion.
Abstract:
In the manufacture of a paint-coated stretchable film which is useful as a covering for automobile panels and other articles, a stretchable carrier film is formed by extruding a thermoplastic polymer composition onto a heat resistant temporary carrier film. The extruded layer is coated with paint or other layers and dried initially at a moderate temperature and finally at a high temperature which exceeds the heat deformation temperature of the stretchable carrier film but not of the heat resistant temporary carrier film. This shortens drying time and/or reduces residual solvents in the dried layers. The temporary carrier film, which is later stripped away, resists deformation of the laminate as it is drawn under tensile stress through the coating and high temperature drying stages.
