Abstract:
A method of treating articles to improve their biocompatibility is disclosed. A polymeric substrate material is positioned within a reactor vessel and exposed to plasma gas discharge in the presence of an atmosphere of an inert gas and then in the presence of an organic gas, such as a fluorinated hydrocarbon gas, which forms a thin, biocompatible surface covalently bonded to the surface of the substrate. The method is particularly useful in the treatment of vascular graft materials to produce grafts that are both thrombi- and emboli-resistant.
Abstract:
A method for electroless overplating of a conductive metal on printed wiring circuitry components mounted upon a plastic substrate which eliminates deposit metal overgrowth upon the plastic substrate and plastic bonding materials. The substrate and printed wiring are treated by exposure to a tetrafluoromethane plasma environment to chemically passivate, or neutralize, the plastic or adhesive substrate surface areas prior to electroless plating of the printed circuitry elements, thus preventing the establishment of catalyzing ions on the plastic or adhesive surfaces and subsequent lay down of the deposited metal thereon.
Abstract:
A system and process for electrodynamic powder coating of conducting and non-conducting substrates using an electrodynamic fluidized bed. The system generally includes a coating applicator means for applying charged particles to the substrate to be coated, and postcharging means for applying to the substrate an additional charge of such polarity as to cause an increase in the electrostatic forces holding the coating particles to the substrate. The system further includes a precharging means for precharging the substrate with a charge of such polarity as to effect more uniform coating of the substrate and a higher rate of coating. Where the substrate to be coated is a continuous web, the system includes a conveying means for conveying the web through the various positions adjacent to the three aforementioned means. The coating applicator means may be an electrodynamic coating apparatus of the electrodynamic fluidized bed type and comprising a fluidized bed means and a charging bed means with a porous wall positioned therebetween, and a recharging means.
Abstract:
An electrode and method for electrostatically treating the surface of a substrate of continuous sheet metal material, wherein the electrode comprises a rotatable, electrically conductive cylindrical member onto and off of a segmental portion of the peripheral surface of which the substrate is continuously wrapped. The cylindrical member has its peripheral surface encompassed by a non-conductive material for engaging the substrate as it passes around the cylindrical member. The nonconductive material includes an insulating barrier for insulating the substrate from the cylindrical member, and outwardly opening cavities to provide an air space between the substrate and the cylindrical member, in the area of the substrate wrapped on the cylindrical member, to enable ionization of the air in such air space for treating the substrate surface wrapped on the cylindrical member upon application of a potential difference between the cylindrical member and the substrate.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for fabricating electrodes used in energy storage devices are provided. In some implementations a surface of the electrode is activated for (a) a pre-treatment process to remove loosely held particles from the electrode surface; (b) a pre-treatment process to activate the surface of the electrode material for improved bonding or wetting for subsequently deposited materials; (c) a post-treatment of the pre-lithiation layer to improve subsequent bonding with additionally deposited layer, for example, passivation layers; and/or (d) a post-treatment of the pre-lithiation layer to improve/accelerate absorption of the lithium into the underlying electrode material.
Abstract:
A composition that is easily applied, clear, well-bonded, and superhydrophobic is disclosed. In one aspect, the composition includes a hydrophobic fluorinated solvent, a binder comprising a hydrophobic fluorinated polymer, and hydrophobic fumed silica nanoparticles. Also disclosed is a structure including a substrate coated with the composition, as well as a method for making the composition and a method of coating a substrate with the composition.
Abstract:
Embodiments relate to surface treating a substrate, spraying precursor onto the substrate using supercritical carrier fluid, and post-treating the substrate sprayed with the precursor to form a layer with nanometer thickness of material on the substrate. A spraying assembly for spraying the precursor includes one or more spraying modules and one or more radical injectors at one or more sides of the spraying module. A differential spread mechanism is provided between the spraying module and the radical injectors to inject spread gas that isolates the sprayed precursor and radicals generated by the radical injectors. As relative movement between the substrate and the spraying assembly is made, portions of the substrate is exposed to first radicals, sprayed with precursors either one of the spraying modules or both spraying modules using supercritical carrier fluid, and then exposed to second radicals again.
Abstract:

The present invention relates to a method of preparing a magnetic powder, comprising: plasma-treating a gas; surface-treating a SmFeN magnetic powder with the plasma-treated gas; and forming a coat layer on the surface of the surface-treated SmFeN magnetic powder.
Abstract:
A method for coating a ceramic matrix composite substrate with an environmental barrier coating includes the steps of: treating a surface of a ceramic matrix composite substrate to adjust wettability of the surface; and applying an aqueous slurry-based environmental barrier coating to the surface. The treating step can be a plasma treatment to remove organic contaminants, and can also be a treatment to modify oxidative state of the surface. The treatment can produce a surface for treatment that is hydrophilic and has a contact angle with aqueous-slurry coating materials of less than 40 degrees.
