Abstract: A photoconductive switch for generating or detecting terahertz radiation (TR) is provided. The photoconductive switch may comprise at least a first and a second pair of electrodes (EV, EH, EGR) on a surface (SS) of a photoconductive substrate, wherein the electrodes of the first pair are separated by a first gap comprising at least a plurality of first rectilinear sections (GV) extending along a first direction (x) and the electrodes of the second pairs are separated by a second gap comprising at least a plurality of second sections (GH) extending along a second direction (y), different from the first direction. The photoconductive switch may further comprise a patterned opaque layer (PML) selectively masking portions of the gaps between the electrodes. Methods and devices for generating and detecting terahertz radiation comprising such photoconductive switches are also provided.

Abstract: A photoelectric conversion apparatus includes an avalanche photodiode including an anode and a cathode, a switch that is connected to one node of the anode and the cathode, and a power line to which a drive voltage is to be applied, and configured to switch a resistance value between the one node and the power line, and a signal generation unit configured to generate a pulse signal for controlling switching of the switch, wherein a value obtained by dividing the number of the pulse signals in a first exposure period by the first exposure period, and a value obtained by dividing the number of the pulse signals in a second exposure period having a length different from a length of the first exposure period, by the second exposure period are different.

Abstract: An optical sensor includes pixels. Each pixel has a photodetector. A readout circuit performs a process over an exposure time where the photodetector is connected to a reverse bias voltage supply to reset a voltage across the photodetector, and the photodetector is disconnected from the reverse bias voltage supply until that the voltage across the photodetector decreases in response to received ambient light. An ambient light level is then determine an based on a number of times the voltage across the photodetector is reset over the exposure time.

Abstract: An optical sensor and filter assembly is provided and includes an optical sensor, a filter and a mounting structure. The optical sensor includes a detector layer having first and second opposed faces and a read-out integrated circuit (ROIC) to which the first face of the detector layer is hybridized. The filter permits passage of one or more wavelength bands of interest of incident light toward the optical sensor and the mounting structure directly hybridizes the filter to the second face of the detector layer.

Abstract: A system for amplification of optical signals for optical measurement instrumentation is disclosed. The system may include a first logarithmic amplifier circuit in a first amplification path, and a linear amplifier circuit and a second logarithmic amplifier circuit coupled in series in a second amplification path. The first and second amplification paths may receive an input signal from a photodiode and provide amplified signals, in parallel, to a selection circuit, which may select one of the outputs of the first and second amplification paths based on one or two power thresholds. The selection circuit may then provide the selected output to a measurement circuit or device. In some examples, the system may also include a sampling circuit to sample the outputs and an analog-digital conversion circuit to digitize the outputs before selection. The power threshold(s) may be determined based on a saturation level of the linear amplifier circuit.

Abstract: A wearable computing device includes an electronic display with a configurable brightness level setting, a physiological metric sensor system including a light source configured to direct light into tissue of a user wearing the wearable computing device and a light detector configured to detect light from the light source that reflects back from the user. The device may further include control circuitry configured to activate the light source during a first period, generate a first light detector signal indicating a first amount of light detected by the light detector during the first period, deactivate the light source during a second period, generate a second light detector signal indicating a second amount of light detected by the light detector during the second period, generate a physiological metric based at least in part on the first light detector signal and the second light detector signal, and modify the configurable brightness level setting based on the second light detector signal.
