The invention relates to low-temperature-stabilized additives for fuel oils having a sulfur content of up 0.05% by weight, comprising fatty acid mixtures of A1) from 1 to 99% by weight of at least one saturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid having from 6 to 50 carbon atoms, A2) from 1 to 99% by weight of at least one unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid having from 6 to 50 carbon atoms, and B) at least one polar nitrogen-containing compound which is effective as paraffin dispersant in middle distillates, in an amount of from 0.01 to 90% by weight, based on the total weight of A1), A2) and B), and to the use of said mixtures for improving the lubrication properties of low-sulfur middle distillates.

A splash-blendable, solubilized diesel fuel composition includes a diesel fuel, ethanol, a stabilizing additive and, optionally, an alkyl ester of a fatty acid and/or a co-solvent. The stabilizing additive is either a mixture of fatty acid alcohols, a polymeric material, or a combination of the mixture and the polymeric material.
Abstract:
Emissions of pollutants from diesel engines are reduced by a combination of mechanical devices and fuel additives. In one series of embodiments, diesel emissions of NO.sub.x and particulates are reduced, simultaneously with gaseous hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, by the combined use of exhaust gas recirculation or engine timing modification, with a particulate trap and a platinum group metal catalyst composition. In another embodiment, a multi-metal catalyst composition, comprising a combination of a platinum metal catalyst composition and at least one auxiliary catalyst metal composition, especially cerium or copper, is employed to provide catalyst metal to the exhaust system including a diesel trap to lower the balance point of the particulate trap (the temperature at which the rate of trap loading equals the rate of regeneration) while also lowering the emissions of carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons. Data for platinum, copper and cerium catalysts establishes effective amounts. Tests also show selective maintenance of low oxidation of SO.sub.2 to SO.sub.3.

An improved lubricity water and diesel fuel emulsion is presented. The emulsion is used as fuel for diesel engines, and includes a lubricity additive selected from the group consisting of dimer acids, trimer acids, phosphate esters, sulfurized castor oil, and mixtures thereof.

This invention provides hydrocarbon oil compositions comprising a major amount of a hydrocarbon oil and, as active ingredients, minor amounts of a copolymer of at least one n-(C.sub.8 -C.sub.40 -alkyl) (meth)acrylate with maleic anhydride, and at least one additive selected from the group consisting of a homopolymer or copolymer derived from an unsaturated hydrocarbon monomer, an ester and a wax anti-settling additive; additive concentrates containing the active ingredients and use of the latter in improving the cold flow properties of hydrocarbon oils.

The invention presented relates to a method for reducing the emission of nitrogen oxides from a diesel engine without significant loss of fuel efficiency and without significant increases in carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. The method involves preparing a diesel engine such that the injection timing thereof is set at a point sufficient to obtain reductions in the nitrogen oxides emissions from the engine; and firing the diesel engine with a diesel fuel having admixed therein an additive which comprises a fuel soluble organometallic platinum group metal coordination composition.

Dioxolanes, thio analogs thereof, and derivatives of these and methods of preparation are described. These materials are useful as additives in lubricants and fuels. Methods for reducing fuel consumption in internal combustion engines employing the lubricating compositions are described.

The amount of soot and invisible particulates emitted with the exhaust of engines run on diesel fuel is reduced by incorporating therein an additive consisting of a mixture of an oxygenated compound and an alkyl cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl.Also disclosed is a method of operating a diesel engine using the fuel of the invention.

The invention disclosed herein is a liquid fuel composition having reduced soot and smoking characterized comprising a major proportion of a liquid hydrocarbon fuel and a minor proportion of Group IIA and Group IIB metal salts of carboxylic acids. A preferred fuel composition is from 0.1 to 0.6 percent by weight of barium- and zinc 2-ethylhexanoates admixed in diesel fuel, wherein the weight ratio of barium to zinc is about 10 to 1. Further improvement in smoke and soot reduction is obtained in hydrocarbon fuels when an ether is additionally incorporated into the salt and fuel mixture. A mixture of from about 0.1 to 0.6 percent by weight of barium 2-ethylhexanoate and zinc 2ethylhexanoate, from between 0.2 to 0.5 percent by weight of the monomethyl ether of ethylene glycol and the balance, a diesel fuel, has substantially reduced smoke and soot forming characteristics.
