Abstract: A valve assembly includes a valve body defining a bore therein, a valve stem, a spring retainer, a valve spring, and a detent mechanism. The valve stem extends through the bore in the valve body and is adjustable between an open position and a closed position. The spring retainer is spaced apart from the valve body along a longitudinal axis of the valve stem and fixed relative to the valve body. The spring retainer defines a bore through which the valve stem extends. The valve spring is captured between the valve body and the spring retainer and is configured to apply a biasing force to the valve stem that biases the valve stem toward the closed position. The detent mechanism is configured to increase the biasing force applied to the valve stem when the valve stem is in the closed position or within a predetermined distance of the closed position.

Abstract: Various embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to liquid-cooled cylinder heads. In one example embodiment, a cylinder head is disclosed including a component which extends into a combustion chamber, an upper cooling jacked, a lower cooling jacket, a plurality of valves arranged around the component, a plurality of cylinder head screws, an oil deck, a fire deck, a plurality of valve guides, and a fixed connection. The fixed connection is arranged from each valve guide to the component, and is a ring having at least one support. The support and the ring extend at least from the oil deck to the fire deck thereby bounding the combustion chamber, and the component is connected to the plurality of cylinder head screws.

Abstract: The present invention is intended is to improve the corrosion resistance of an overlay used in a nuclear power plant, and to reduce dissolution of cobalt from an overlay. The corrosion and wear resistant overlay is formed along a surface of a base by laser lamination modeling, and is configured from a plurality of metal layers of a Co-base alloy. The thickness of carbide eutectics that precipitate in the metal layers is the largest in the metal layer closest to the base, and is gradually smaller in the metal layers farther away from the base. The intensity of the laser beam applied to form layers by laser lamination modeling is adjusted so that the carbide eutectics that precipitate in at least the outermost metal layer have a controlled size of 10 μm or less.

Abstract: A valve actuation system is disclosed for use with an internal combustion engine. The valve actuation system may have a rocker shaft, a rocker arm pivotally mounted on the rocker shaft, at least one cam follower and a pushrod connecting the at least one cam follower to the rocker arm. The valve actuation system may also have a plurality of gas exchange valves, and a bridge connecting the rocker arm to the valves. The valve actuation system may further have at least one spring disposed around each of the valves and configured to bias each of the valves toward closed positions, and a rotocoil configured to rotatably connect the at least one spring to each of the valves. The rotocoil may have an internal chamfer at a bridge end with an angle of about 26-28°. The at least one spring may have an assembled load of about 750-850 N.

Abstract: A method for making a valve stem seal, comprising the steps of providing a metal retainer having a top portion and a body portion. The body portion having a first section and a second section. In a first state, the first section of the body portion is cylindrical and the second section of the body portion is cone shaped. Providing a hollow mold. Inserting the metal retainer into the outer mold piece, inserting the inner mold piece into the metal retainer, and then securing the inner and outer mold pieces to each other. Filling a cavity around the top portion of the metal retainer with an elastomeric compound. Removing the metal retainer and the formed rubber sealing element from the mold pieces, and pressing downward over the formed valve stem seal to compress the second section of the body portion radially inwardly.

Abstract: A system includes a rocker arm assembly for operative engagement with a first and second cam. The assembly includes a first arm for operatively engaging the first cam for a first desired lift profile, a second arm for operatively engaging the second cam for a second desired lift profile, where the second arm includes a latch to engage the second arm with the first arm. The latch is responsive to supplied oil pressure and release oil pressure to switch between lift profiles. Abstract: A system for lubricating a valve assembly of an engine. The system includes a valve bridge having a base portion is disposed on a guide rod. The guide rod is received within a hole defined in the base portion of the valve bridge to define a chamber and to receive lubricant in the chamber. The valve bridge includes an arm that is engaged with a valve stem. The valve bridge includes a passage in fluidly communicating with the chamber and an end of the arm. The system includes a valve disposed around the valve stem and valve stem guide. The valve seal includes a lip member that abuts an outer surface of the valve stem to control a flow of the lubricant from the passage to a gap defined between the valve stem and the valve stem guide.
