Abstract: The invention relates to selected cyclohexane-1,3- and 1,4-dicarboxylic acid esters, to their use as plasticizers in synthetic materials and to their production. The inventive method of production comprises hydrating the corresponding isophthalic acid and terephthalic acid esters by contacting one or more of such isophthalic acid or terephthalic acid esters with a hydrogen--containing gas in the presence of a catalyst. Said catalyst contai ns as the active metal at least one metal of subgroup VIII of the periodic system alone or together with at least one metal of subgroup I or VII of the periodic system, applied on a substrate. The inventive method is further characterized in that the substrate is macroporous.

Abstract: The mixture described is a mixture of isomeric nonanol diesters of a dicarboxylic acid, selected from the class consisting of a mixture of diesters of adipic acid in the 1H NMR spectrum of which, observed in CDCl3, the ratio of the area under the resonance signals at chemical shifts in the range from 1.0 to 2.0 ppm with respect to TMS to the area under the resonance signals at chemical shifts in the range from 0.5 to 1.0 ppm with respect to TMS is from 1.20 to 5.00 and a mixture of diesters of phthalic acid, in the 1H NMR spectrum of which, observed in CDCl3, the ratio of the area under the resonance signals at chemical shifts in the range from 1.1 to 3.0 ppm with respect to TMS to the area under the resonance signals at chemical shifts in the range from 0.5 to 1.1 ppm with respect to TMS is from 1.00 to 4.00.The diesters of adipic and phthalic acid are suitable as plasticizers for PVC-based molding compositions and have high compatibility, a low cold crack temperature, low torsional rigidity and/or high thermal stability.

Abstract: The hydrogenation of esters of benzene-dicarboxylic acids is carried out on supported catalysts containing a Sub-Group VIIII metal on a macroporous support. A process for the hydrogenation of benzene-dicarboxylic acid ester(s) with hydrogen in presence of a supported catalyst containing Sub-Group VIII metal(s) on a macroporous support. If the ester is dimethyl terephthalate, this excludes hydrogenation on a catalyst containing ruthenium, with or without Sub-Group I, VII or VIII metal(s), on a support with an average pore diameter (APD) of at least 50 nm and a BET surface of not more than 30 m /g, with an active metal content of 0.01-30 wt.% and a ratio of (active metal surface):(support surface) of less than 0.05, and/or on a catalyst containing 0.01-30 wt.% active metal(s) as above on a support in which 10-50 vol.% of the pores consist of macropores with a diameter of 50-10,000 nm and 50-90 vol.% consist of mesopores with a diameter of 2-50 nm.

Alternatively said mixture is selected among a mixture of phthalic aci d diesters in whose 1H-NMR spectrum, obtained in CDCl3, the ratio of the surfa ce area below the resonance signals in case of chemical shifts of between 1.1 a nd 3.0 ppm towards TMS to the surface area below the resonance signals in case of chemical shifts of between 0.5 and 1.1 ppm towards TMS is between 1.00 and 4.00. The above adipic and phthalic acid diesters are suitable for use as softeners for moulding materials on a PVC basis and characterized by high compatibility, low brittleness temperature, low stiffness in torsion and/or high thermal stability.
