    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a skin-beautifying cosmetic effective for suppressing and improving the pigmentation of the skin by using an extract of SOUJUTSU (rhizome of Atractylodes lancea) as an active component. CONSTITUTION: This skin-beautifying cosmetic contains a liquid extract extracted from Atractylodes lancea (a plant of the family Composite) as an active component usually in an amount of 0.001-20wt.%, preferably 0.001-3wt.% in terms of dried solid. The extract is produced by pulverizing the whole grass or the leaf, stalk, rhizome, fruit, seed and/or flower of Atractylodes lancea or its dried product and extracting with a solvent (e.g. ethanol) at room temperature or under heating. The pigmentation suppressing effect can be improved by adding other conventional anti-inflammatory agent (e.g. allantoin), antioxidant (e.g. α-tocopherol), etc. It can be prepared in the form of O/W-type or W/O-type emulsified cosmetic, cream, cosmetic milky lotion, face lotion, oily cosmetic, pack, foundation, etc., by properly adding conventional cosmetic components.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound which is a new gamma-pyrone glucoside having an excellent whitening effect on the skin and an excellent preventive and therapeutic effect on a spot or a freckle caused by sunburn, etc., and useful as a cosmetic material for cream, emulsion, lotion, etc. CONSTITUTION:A new gamma-pyrone glucoside [e.g. maltol-3-O-(6'-O-apiosyl)-glucoside] represented by formula I (R is H or the group of formula II), having an excellent whitening effect on the skin and an excellent preventive and therapeutic effect on a spot or a ephelis caused by sunburn, etc., and useful, e.g. as a raw material for a cream-, ointment-, emulsion-, lotion-, solution-, gel-, pack- or stick-state cosmetic. This compound is obtained by grinding dried tapioca roots, extracting the obtained powder with 20% aqueous ethanol, treating the resultant extract with an adsorption resin column, eluting it with methanol and subsequently purifying the eluted fraction by the medium-pressure reverse phase chromatography.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for physiologically active substances such as pheromones. CONSTITUTION:This (S)-2-(t-butyldimethylsilyloxy)-1-nitropropane is expressed by the formula. The compound can be obtained at a low cost on a large scale by reacting (S)-1-nitro-2-propanol with t-butyldimethylsilyl chloride in a solvent such as DMF. Furthermore, this compound can be used as a raw material and subjected to the Michael addition reaction with methyl vinyl ketone in the presence of a base and subsequently the denitration hydrogenating reaction in tributylstannane/azobisisobutyronitrile system to afford optically active 6-(t- butyldimethylsilyloxy)-2-heptanone.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject external agent for skin excellent in the treatment of pigmentation caused by the spots, freckles, sun-burn, etc., stability and safety by compounding a phenylalaninol derivative or a tyrosinol derivative as an effective component. The composition is formulated as a cosmetic in a form of lotion, milky lotion, cream, ointment, stick, solution, pack, jell, etc. A compound of formula I is obtained by suspending a phenylalanin derivative or a tyrosin derivative of formula II in alcohol, adding thionyl chloride dropwise under heating and stirring to lead to the ester, adding benzoyl chloride or an alkanoyl chloride dropwise to lead to a compound of formula III and finally subjecting this compound to reduction.
