Abstract: Aqueous sodium methioninate solutions which have a low sodium carbonate content can be obtained from the crude hydrolysis mixtures which are formed when 5-(ss-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin is hydrolysed with 1.1 to 6 equivalents of sodium hydroxide and/or sodium carbonate, by bringing the hydrolysis mixture to a sodium methioninate content of between 10 and 65% by weight, preferably between 15 and 40% by weight, treating the mixture with 0.15 to 6 times its volume, preferably 0.25 to 4 times its volume, of methanol or ethanol, removing the sodium carbonate which has precipitated and concentrating the filtrate until the sodium methioninate content is 40 to 65% by weight.

Abstract: Aqueous solutions of sodium salts of alpha -aminocarboxylic acids practically free of foreign salts are produced by saponifying the corresponding hydantoin at a temperature between 110 DEG C. and 180 DEG C. with a mixture, in each case based on the hydantoin, of 1 equivalent of sodium hydroxide and 2 equivalents of calcium oxide or hydroxide, separating off the precipitated calcium carbonate after the end of the saponification and concentrating the aqueous sodium salt solution remaining to drive off the ammonia contained therein.

Abstract: The present invention provides a process for producing an .alpha.-ketocarboxylic amide having the general formula (I) (I) wherein R' represents a t-alkyl radical containing 4 to 18 carbon atoms and R represents a straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms which can also be singly or multiply substituted by the phenyl radical or by a halogen atom or represents a cycloalkyl radical containing 3 to 8 carbon atoms, which, if required is singly or multiply substituted by an alkyl radical containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms or it is singly or multiply substituted by a halogen atom or represents a phenyl or naphthyl radical, which may be substituted or a five-membered heterocyclic radical, which may be substituted if said substituents being halogen atoms, nitro groups or alkyl or alkoxy radicals containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms, which process comprises condensing an acyl cyanide having the general formula (II) R - CO - CN (II) wherein R has the meanings defined above either a) with a tertiary alcohol having the general formula (III) NO - R' (III) wherein R' is as above or b) with an alkene having the general formula (IV) (IV) wherein R1 and R2 are identical or different and represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical and R3 and R4 are identical or different and represent an alkyl radical, each of said alkyl radicals containing 1 to 15 carbon atoms in an acid medium. Some of the keto carboxylic acids of formula I are useful as intermediates in the production of herbicides. They are also useful directly as fungicides. The amides of formuls I may be hydrolyzed to the free acids some of which are metabilic intermediates in the preparation of .alpha.-amino acids.

Abstract: The present invention provides in a process for producing glycide by reacting allyl alcohol with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of tungsten compounds, distilling the excess allyl alcohol and the major portion of the water in vacuo, dividing the bottom mixture thus obtained at a temperature of from 110 to 220.degree.C and at a pressure of from 5 to 60 torr in a falling-film evaporator into an exhaust vapour consisting primarily of glycide, higher-boiling by-products and the residual portion of the water and a bottom product of glycerin, polyglycerin and the catalyst the improvement in which said exhaust vapour; upon leaving the falling-film evaporator is directly separated into glycide, water and higher boiling byproducts at a pressure of from 5 to 60 torr.
