Date Sep. 28, 1995Graft polymers which contain N-vinyl units and in which the grafting base is a polymer which contains in each case at least 5% by weight of units of the formulae (I) (II) where R1 and R2 are each H or C1-C6-alkyl, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers are grafted onto the grafting base in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100, and which have K values of at least 7 (determined according to H. Fikentscher in 5% strength by weight aqueous solution at 25 DEG C. and pH 7), are prepared by polymerization of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of polymers which in each case contain at least 5% by weight of units of the formulae I and/or II as the grafting base in a weight ratio of from 100:1 to 1:100, and are used as dispersants for pigments, as additives for detergents and cleaning agents, and strength agents for paper and as soil stabilizers and for fertilizer compaction.

Abstract: The invention concerns the use, as dispersants for aqueous pigment suspensions, of partially esterified copolymers obtained by the copolymerization of (a) at least one C4 to C28 olefin and (b) ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydrides with 4 to 8 C-Atoms in the molar ratio of 1:0.5 to 1:2 and the subsequent partial esterification of the copolymer with reaction products of (A) C1 to C30 alcohols, C8 to C22 fatty acids, C1 to C12 alkylphenols or secondary C2 to C30 amines and (B) at least one C2 to C4 alkylene oxide or tetrahydrofuran in the molar ratio (A):(B) of 1:2 to 1:200, and hydrolysis of the anhydride groups in the copolymer to give carboxyl groups, the partial esterification of the copolymer being carried out to an extent such that 1 to 50 % of the carboxyl groups in the copolymer are esterified. The invention also concerns pigment suspensions containing such partially esterified copolymers.

Abstract: A water-soluble or water-dispersible graft copolymer obtainable by free-radical graft copolymerization of (I) at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer onto (II)polymers with a molecular weight of 200 - 5000 of monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides thereof using from 5 to 2,000 parts by weight of the monomers (I) per 100 parts by weight of grafting base, a process for preparing the graft copolymers and the use of the graft copolymers as additive to phosphate-free or reduced phosphate textile detergents, as dispersants and preventers of deposits in cleaners for hard surfaces and as water-treatment agents for reducing the deposition of scale and the separation out of water hardness in water-con-veying systems.

Abstract: In a cationic modification process for starch, starch is reacted with polymers that contain amino and/or ammonium groups in an aqueous medium at temperatures from 115 to 180 ·C under an increased pressure and in the absence of oxidisers, polymerisation initiators and alkali. The reaction is conducted so that maximum 10% by weight starch has its molar weight reduced. Also disclosed is the use of the thus obtained reaction products as dry strength agents for paper.

Abstract: The invention concerns agglomerated particles of finely divided polymers which are water-soluble or capable of swelling in water and contain ammonium carboxlyate groups, and a process for their preparation by azeotropic dehydration of water-in-oil emulsions of the polymers, which are water-soluble or capable of swelling in water and contain ammonium carboxylate groups, in the presence of 0.1 to 40 wt %, relative to the polymers, of polyalkylene glycols, which have an agglomerating effect and are obtained by the addition of C2 to C4 alkylene oxides to alcohols, phenols, amines or carboxylic acids and which contain at least two alkylene oxide units incorporated by polymerization, and additionally from 0.1 to 20 wt %, relative to the polymers, of protective colloids which are obtained by radical copolymerization of C8 to C40 mono-olefins with monoethylenically unsaturated C4 to C6 dicarboxylic acid anhydrides in the manner of a substance polymerization at temperatures from 80 to 300 DEG C to form copolymers having molar masses of 500 to 20,000 g/mol. The invention further concerns the use of the agglomerated polymer particles as thickeners for textile pigment printing inks.
