Abstract: Oxyalkylated, carboxyl-containing polymers are prepared by reacting (A) a polymer which contains one or more monoethylenically unsaturated C3-C6-carboxylic acids as copolymerized units with (B) an alkylene oxide in an aqueous medium at not more than 120 DEG C. by a process in which the reaction is started at a pH of from 5.0 to 5.9 and is ended after a pH of from 5.5 to 8.5 has been reached. As a result of monitoring of the pH, the selectivity of the addition reaction of alkylene oxides with the polymers (A) is substantially improved compared with known processes.

Abstract: Process for preparing stable water-in-oil emulsions of hydrolysed polymers of N-vinylamides of the formula in which R and R denote H or C1-C6-alkyl, by polymerising compounds of the formula I, alone or mixed with other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, in the form of water-in-oil emulsions to give water-in-oil polymer emulsions, and subsequently hydrolysing the polymers, the hydrolysis of the polymers in the form of water-in-oil polymer emulsions being carried out in the presence of acids or bases and from 1 to 30% by weight, based on the polymers, of emulsifiers which are obtainable by reacting (A) C10- to C22-fatty alcohols with epichlorohydrin in the molar ratio 1:0.5 to 1:1.5 to give glycidyl ethers, (B) reacting the glycidyl ethers with (1) saturated C2- to C6-alcohols containing 2 to 6 OH groups or (2) monoethers thereof with C10- to C22-fatty alcohols, in the glycidyl ether:(1) or (2) molar ratio of from 1:0.5 to 6, in the presence of acids or bases, and (C) alkoxylating the reaction products from (B) using at least one C2- to C4-alkylene oxide in the molar ratio 1:1 to 6. The polymer emulsions obtainable in this way are used as dewatering, retention and flocculating agents in the production of paper and paper products.

Abstract: Insoluble, slightly-swelling polymers containing amino groups obtainable from popcorn polymers which contain units of structure (I), in which R, R = H or C1 to C4 alkyl, by the separation of the R-CO- group from at least 2 % of the monopolymerised units of structure (I) with the formation of units of structure (II), process for producing the amino group-containing popcorn polymers by the polymerisation of N-vinyl carboxylic acid amides and possibly other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers copolymerisable therewith containing 0.1 to 10 % wt. in relation to the monomers used in polymerisation of an at least two-ethylenically unsaturated unconjugated double-bond-containing compound as the cross-linking agent with the exclusion of oxygen, and polymerisation initiators to form popcorn polymers and the separation of formyl groups from at least 2 % of the polymerised N-vinyl carboxylic acid amides and use of the insoluble, slightly-swelling polymers with amino groups as an ion exchangers or adsorber resins for metal ions.
