    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for realizing an optical cross connection exchange that can switch optical signals relating to many optical channels and requires only a few wavelength selection elements to each passing signal path and to provide an exchange. SOLUTION: The number of the wavelength selection elements having been required for signal paths of a conventional optical cross connection exchange is considerably reduced in the new optical cross connection exchange of this invention. A single optical channel distributor or more distributors accept wavelength multiplex optical signal as an input. Each signal includes channels, each of which is related to a single wavelength or more. Each distributor is distributed to any of a plurality of wavelength selection cross connectors arranged to receive each channel of the related wavelength multiplex input signal from the single or a plurality of distributors relating to a unique subset among a plurality of wavelengths.

SOLUTION: A medium exchange monitor in this invention is disclosed; when a call between two concerned parties is made in a phone conference (an adhoc conference) (1), a mixer is incorporated for the call between the two concerned parties, when participants of the phone conference retire from the conference by leaving only the two participants (2), elimination of the mixer is selectively conducted. A packet phone system responds to a request to the phone conference by connecting the mixer to serve the phone conference between the concerned parties. In the case that the participants except the two participants only retire from the conference, the mixer is eliminated from the phone conference. In the case that a change of elimination/adoption of the mixer is required, the medium exchange monitor first inquires of each participant about each capability to realize desirable connection performance.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and its method for keeping constant relatively a gain per channel of an optical channel in an optical amplification WDM system even when an input intensity of an optical amplifier changes. SOLUTION: A gain of an optical amplifier is controlled by controlling a pumping intensity amount to be supplied to the optical amplifier as a function of a change of an optical input intensity to be measured in a feed forward monitoring route. The pumping intensity amount is adjusted according to a proportional relationship with respect to the measured input intensity. The pumping intensity is directly controlled, so that the gain of the optical amplifier is controlled in a time scale of less than microsecond from a detection of a change of the input intensity. Furthermore, a gain per channel in the amplified WDM signal is kept relatively constant irrespective of the change of the input intensity of the optical amplifier, thereby reducing substantially an intensity deflection in an optical channel in which the WDM signal is left behind.

SOLUTION: In a titanium-tantalum barrier thin film used together with an interconnecting thin film of copper, a relatively excessive titanium/insufficient tantalum portion is formed near the boundary between the thin film and a dielectric thin film, and a relatively excessive tantalum/insufficient titanium portion is formed near the boundary between the thin film and a conductive interconnecting thin film formed on the barrier layer. Excessive titanium/ insufficient tantalum portion causes the thin film, to firmly stick to the dielectric thin film and the excessive tantalum/insufficient titanium portion suppresses formation of an intermetallic compound by forming a hetero-epitaxial interface with the interconnecting thin film. The single titanium-tantalum thin film, having a compositional gradient from the top to the bottom, can be formed by various techniques including PVD, CVD, sputter deposition using a sputtering target having a uniform composition, and sputter deposition using a plurality of sputtering targets. A synthetic titanium-tantalum thin film is composed of two separately formed thin films.
