Abstract: A method of performing a determination of an item of interest in a sample using a single structure is disclosed. A sample is provided accesssible to t he single structure. A first container for processing the sample is placed in a first process path on the single structure. The sample is transferred to the first container in the first process path. A reagent is added to the first container in the first process path. Contents of the first container is mixe d in the first process path. The item of interest in the sample is separated from the contents of the first container in the first process path. The separated item of interest in the sample is transferred from the first container in the first process path to a second container in a second proces s path on the single structure. Contents of the second container are brought t o a first temperature different from a temperature of the first process path i n the second process path. The item of interest in the second container is detected in the second process path.

Abstract: Methods of constructing a structure for determining an item of interest in a sample are provided. According to one method, an effective length of movement of a container (15) for holding the sample in a process lane (28) where a process step is selectively automatically performed on the sample in the container (15) is determined. The process lane (28) is constructed such that the process lane (28) meets at least one of a predetermined throughput and a predetermined physical dimension. Elements are arranged along the process lane (28) such that the container (15) moves the effective length during performance of a determination of an item of interest.

Abstract: Optical systems are provided. In one embodiment, the optical system includes a detector for detecting a light signal. A light signal gatherer and guider is optically connected with the detector for gathering the light signal and guiding the light signal to the detector. The light signal gatherer and guider has a check signal entrance location disposed along an outer surface of the light signal gatherer and guider. A check signal source is optically connected with the light signal gatherer and guider so that a check signal generated by the check signal source randomly illuminates the check signal entrance location on the outer surface of the light signal gatherer and guider.

Abstract: A method of constructing at least a first process lane and a second process lane, both for determining an item of interest in a sample; the method includes the steps of: (a) defining an effective length representing a total traveled distance of a container, in which the item of interest in the sample is determined, along a process lane where a process step comprises a process for determining the item of interest in the sample is performed; (b) constructing the first process lane to have a first physical length and the effective length; and (c) constructing the second process lane to have a second physical length different from the first physical length and the effective length; the sample is in particular a body fluid, for example, blood, on which tests are to be carried out for a component in the fluid, as part of the determination of the health of a person from whom the sample is obtained.
