Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of open-cell, flexible polyurethane foams using, as cell opener, a polyetherol which can be prepared by the addition reaction of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide onto hydroxyl-containing initiator substances with basic catalysis and which has a hydroxyl number of from 30 to 60 mg of KOH/g, an ethylene oxide content of from 60 to 80% by weight of the total amount of alkylene oxide, a primary hydroxyl group content of 70% of the total hydroxyl group content and a functionality of from 2.5 to 3.5.

Abstract: Reticulated flexible polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting organic and/or modified organic polyisocyanates (a) with a polyetherol mixture (b) and, if required, further compounds (c) having hydrogen atoms reactive toward isocyanates, in the presence of water and/or other blowing agents (d), catalysts (e) and further assistants and additives (f), by a process in which the polyetherol mixture (b) comprises b1) at least one difunctional or polyfunctional polyetherol having an OH number of from 20 to 150 mg KOH/g, based on propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide and ethylene oxide and having an ethylene oxide content of more than 40% by weight, based on the total amount of alkylene oxide used, (b1.1) and, if required, further difunctional or polyfunctional polyetherols having an OH number of from 20 to 150 mg KOH/g, based on propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide and ethylene oxide and having an ethylene oxide content of not more than 40% by weight, based on the total amount of alkylene oxide used, which have a content of primary OH groups of more than 40%, (b1.2), with total amounts of the component (b1) of at least 70% by weight, based on the total weight of the component (b), (b1.1) being present in amounts of at least 50% by weight, based on the total weight of the component (b), and b2) at least one difunctional or polyfunctional polyetherol based on propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide and having an OH number of more than 25 mg KOH/g, in amounts of not more than 30% by weight, based on the total weight of the component (b), and silicone stabilizers are used in amounts of from 0.02 to 5% by weight, based on the total weight of the components (b) to (f). The reticulated flexible polyurethane foams themselves prepared in this manner are used for upholstery purposes, for cavity filling and as support medium and filter medium.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method for the preparation of FCHC-free polyurethane soft (molded) foam materials with low density, by reacting (A) liquid polyisocyanate mixtures containing bound urethane groups, containing 22 to 30 weight percent of NCO groups, which in turn are prepare by reacting a mixture of diphenylmethane-diisocyanate and polyphenyl-polymethylene-polyisocyanates (raw MDI) with at least one polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene-polyol with a functionality between 2.5 and 3.6, a hydroxyl number between 50 and 90 and a polymerized ethylene oxide group concentration ranging from more than 30 to less than 50 weight percent, relative to the weight of the polymerized ethylene oxide and 1,2 propylene oxide groups, or by reacting of 4,4' diphenylmethane-diisocyanate (MDI) or an MDI-isomeric mixture with the above-named polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene-polyol to form an NCO-group-containing quasi-prepolymer, and diluting this quasi-prepolymer with raw-MDI, with (B) higher-molecular polyhydroxyl compounds and, if appropriate, (C) low-molecular chain lengthening and/or cross-linkage promoting materials, in the presence of (D) propellants, (E) catalysts as well as, if appropriate, (F) auxiliary materials and/or additives. Also disclosed are polyisocyanate mixtures modified with urethane groups (A), which are utilizable for carrying out the above method.

Abstract: The novel copolymers having K values of from 5 to 80 are prepared by free-radical polymerisation of A) 20 to 80% by weight, based on the total weight of (A) and (B), of at least one olefinically unsaturated polyoxyalkylene alcohol or polyester alcohol adduct, (B) 80 to 20% by weight, based on the total weight of (A) and (B), of at least one vinyl monomer from the group comprising N-vinylformamide, -2-pyrrolidone, -2-piperidone, -2-caprolactam, -imidazole, -2-ethyleneurea and -2-propyleneurea, C) 0.05 to 40 parts by weight of glycidyl acrylate and/or glycidyl methacrylate, D) 0 to 10 parts by weight of at least one alpha , beta -monoolefinically unsaturated acid and E) 0 to 30 parts by weight of at least one olefinically unsaturated carboxamide and/or carboxylate and/or styrene, the parts by weight of (C), (D) and (E) in each case being based on 100 parts by weight of the monomers (A) and (B). The copolymers are used as assistants and/or additives, for example as dispersion and/or emulsification assistants, or as additives for improving the mechanical properties, in formulations for the preparation of polyisocyanate polyaddition products.

Abstract: A new method for preparing foamed materials involves the reaction of: (a) isocyanates; (b) compounds reactive to isocyanates of molecular weight 500-8500; and optionally (c) chain lengthening and/or crosslinking agents of molecular weight 60-499 in the presence of: (d) a propellant; and (e) a catalyst, and optionally (f) adjuvants and/or additives. Foamed materials are prepared by reaction of (a) isocyanates with (b) compounds reactive to isocyanates of molecular weight 500-8500 and optionally (c) chain lengthening and/or crosslinking agents of molecular weight 60-499 in the presence of (d) a propellant and (e) a catalyst, and optionally (f) adjuvants and/or additives. The isocyanate (a) is 2,4- and or 2,6-toluylenediisocyanate and/or 4,4, 2,2, and/or 2,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and the reaction is carried out in the presence of (e1) 0.02-0.08 wt.% triethylenediamine and 0.05-0.3 wt.% of at least one aminoalkyl and/or aminophenyl-imidazole (e2) of formulas (I) and/or (II): where: R -R = phenyl, halogen, H, 1-10C linear or branched alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, N-mono- or 1-4C N,N-dialkylamino, N-mono- or N,N-dialkylaminoalkylene, i.e. 1-4C alkyl and 2-4C alkylene, R = R , with the exception of halogen and alkoxy; Y = H, 2-4C hydroxalkyl, or hydroxypolyoxyalkyl with 2-20 alkylene oxide units, X (catalyst) = 2-6C alkylene or phenyl, Z = H, 1-4C alkylene, phenyl, 2-4C hydroxyalkyl, or 2-20C hydroxypolyoxyalkylene, and the weigh proportions of (e1) and (e2) are based on the weight proportion of component (b)(sic). Independent claims are included for: (1) A spongy plastic based on polyurethanes, prepared as above; (2) a mixture containing (e1) triethylenediamine and (e2) at least one aminoalkyl- and/or aminophenyl-imidazole at an e1 to e2 ratio of 1.6:1 to 0.06:1.
