Abstract: The light valve comprises transparent substrates and a rear plane separated from the substrate by a twisted, nematic liquid crystal (LC) layer with LC molecules with a director axis. The rear plane contains reflecting electrodes with edges parallel, or orthogonal to the director axis of the molecules, when the director axis is projected onto the rear plane surface. The molecules in the twisted, nematic layer are so oriented by transparent substrate rubbing as to bee oriented in a first direction, twisted from horizontal or vertical of the rear plane rubbing. Independent claims are included for a projection system.

Abstract: A two-electrode nematic liquid crystal display (LCD) device with inherent storage effect is described. Abstract: A liquid crystal element, a packaging structure providing thermal and alignment control, a display device including the same, and methods of fabrication and assembly are provided. The liquid crystal element includes: a semiconductor wafer, having microcircuitry and an array of reflective pixels; a layer of electro-optical responsive liquid crystal medium, of uniform thickness, disposed on the reflective pixels; a transparent conductive layer positioned on the liquid crystal, being substantially parallel to the reflective layers, to ensure a uniform thickness of the liquid crystal; and an insulative transparent layer provided on the conductive layer. The liquid crystal element is laminated to an optically flat substrate to limit the out-of-plane distortions thereof. The structure formed by element and substrate are disposed in a substrate holder which is mounted to a wiring board, and coupled to voltage sources for actuating the liquid crystal. During mounting, an aligning fixture is used to ensure proper orientation of the element relative to the related optical elements. Once the element is positioned, a heat sink is coupled to the rear surface of the substrate holder to dissipate heat.

Abstract: Reflektierendes Lichtventil zum Bereitstellen eines verbesserten Dunkelzustands, wobei das reflektierende Lichtventil beinhaltet: ein transparentes Substrat; eine verdrehte, nematische Flüssigkristallschicht, die Flüssigkristallmoleküle mit einer Direktor-Achse aufweist; und eine Rückebene, die von dem transparenten Substrat durch die verdrehte nemantische Flüssigkristallschicht getrennt ist, wobei die Rückebene aus einem unteren Substrat und einer Ausrichtungsschicht besteht, wobei das untere Substrat reflektierende Elektroden mit Kanten beinhaltet, wobei die Direktor-Achse der Flüssigkristallschicht am unteren Substrat aufgrund der Reibrichtung der Ausrichtungsschicht in Bezug auf die Kanten der reflektierenden Elektroden parallel oder senkrecht ausgerichtet ist, wobei die reflektierenden Elektroden sägezahnförmige Kanten aufweisen, wobei die Segmente der einzelnen sägezahnförmigen Kanten jeder reflektierenden Elektrode unter den Winkeln 45° und 135° bezüglich der einfallenden Polarisation angeordnet sind.

Voltages are selectively applied to each of the second and third electrodes such that the stable state of the liquid crystalline layer is changed from the ordered (homeotropic) or clear state, to the disordered (focal conic) or dark state.
