Abstract: PURPOSE: To easily attain an operation without occupying a space on a desk by hanging a bar code reading device from a ceiling, and adjusting the vertical height. CONSTITUTION: A laser scanning device 10 is supported from a ceiling 12 of a room through an appropriate flexible cable 14, and the height can be adjusted by pulling in and out the cable 14 in a cable length adjuster 16. The laser scanning device 10 can be hanged on a surface 20 of a supporting stand on which a merchandise 22 or the like is placed, and a bar code can be read. Such laser scanning device 10 is hanged from the ceiling and the height can be adjusted so that the merchandise 22 can be operated by both hands without occupying a place.

An optional detector 140 detects a part of the light of variable intensity reflected from the symbol and an electric signal showing the detected optical intensity is transferred to the memory array 20 as a digital value. CPU 35 accesses to the memory array 20, judges whether the reflected light of variable intensity shows or not the set pattern of the bar code and confirms the orientation of the symbol with respect to the scanning pattern based on the judgment.

CONSTITUTION: When a switch is operated with a light source which can be started, a semiconductor laser diode 42, for example, one of head parts generates the incident laser light beams. The laser diode 42 is fitted to a printed circuit board 48. The optical device fitted in the head is arranged to be adjusted by the laser diode 42 so that it optically corrects the incident laser light beams and it faces a prescribed reference face in front of a projection part outside the head along a first optical path. The optical device has a long and optical cylinder 50, and a cylindrical bore 52 accepts a circular casing part and holds it so that it does not move. A lens barrel 54 is fitted so that it can move in a vertical direction. Thus, a user can easily make the scanning head turn to the mark.

A display device 55, a panel 56 and a battery 58 are connected through a cable connector 54, the laser diode 32, a motor 20, the sensor 44, the signal processing circuit and the control circuit 53 are operated by the operation of a trigger 60 and the symbol is read.

The array 30 includes a flexible base having two degree of mechanical freedom for providing two resonating states, that is, low frequency (y) scanning for the raster pattern, and high frequency (y) scanning for the full directional pattern. Also, the array 30 is driven by an electromagnetic force generated by a coil 44 surrounding a permanent magnet 42 fixed to the array 30.

CPU 35 access to bit map image data within video RAM 20, scans/ decodes the image of the visual field 11, finds the bar code data symbol 10 and translate the code. A row and a column are address-specified by a linear pattern tilt-arranged concerning the row and the column of the memory array at this time so that reading at various angular position within the visual field is attained.
