Abstract: Reticulated flexible polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting organic and/or modified organic polyisocyanates (a) with a polyetherol mixture (b) and, if required, further compounds (c) having hydrogen atoms reactive toward isocyanates, in the presence of water and/or other blowing agents (d), catalysts (e) and further assistants and additives (f), by a process in which the polyetherol mixture (b) comprisesb1) at least one difunctional or polyfunctional polyetherol having an OH number of from 20 to 150 mg KOH/g, based on propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide and ethylene oxide and having an ethylene oxide content of more than 40% by weight, based on the total amount of alkylene oxide used, (b1.1) and, if required, further difunctional or polyfunctional polyetherols having an OH number of from 20 to 150 mg KOH/g, based on propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide and ethylene oxide and having an ethylene oxide content of not more than 40% by weight, based on the total amount of alkylene oxide used, which have a content of primary OH groups of more than 40%, (b1.2), with total amounts of the component (b1) of at least 70% by weight, based on the total weight of the component (b), (b1.1) being present in amounts of at least 50% by weight, based on the total weight of the component (b), andb2) at least one difunctional or polyfunctional polyetherol based on propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide and having an OH number of more than 25 mg KOH/g, in amounts of not more than 30% by weight, based on the total weight of the component (b),and silicone stabilizers are used in amounts of from 0.02 to 5% by weight, based on the total weight of the components (b) to f). The reticulated flexible polyurethane foams themselves prepared in this manner are used for upholstery purposes, for cavity filling and as support medium and filter medium.

Abstract: Ceramic foams are prepared by reaction of organic and/or modified organic polyisocyanates with a polyetherol mixture comprising a mixture of bifunctional polyetherols and up to 60 wt.% of a suitable inorganic solid followed by drying and baking. Ceramic foams (I) are prepared by reaction of organic and/or modified organic polyisocyanates (A) with a polyetherol mixture (B) and optionally other hydrogen atom containing compounds (C) that are reactive with isocyanates in the presence of water and/or other propellants (D), catalysts (E) and processing aids and additiives (F) followed by drying and baking whereby the polyetherol mixture (B) comprises at least 60 wt.% of at least one bifunctional polyetherol (B1) having an OH number of 20-150 mgKOH/g based on propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide and ethylene oxide whereby the ethylene oxide content is greater than 40 wt.% (with respect to the total quantity of alkylene oxide) and up to 40 wt.% of at least one bifunctional polyetherol (B2) having an OH number of greater than 25 mgKOH/g based on propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide and up to 60 wt.% of a suitable inorganic solid (F1) (with respect to all components (B)-(F).

Abstract: The invention concerns a foam consisting of at least 70 wt. % of carbon, having an average cell size more than 30 mu m, porosity between 35 % and 99.7 %, a percentage of open cells higher than 90 %, and comprising linking elements between the cells, which, viewed in cross-section, form a triangle with inward-curving sides. Inside the surface of the cross-section, the sum of the surfaces having a cavity constitutes less than 5 % of the total cross-sectional area of the linking elements. The invention also concerns the use of said foams consisting for the major part of carbon in electrical and electrochemical applications, in the form of filtering material, heat insulation material, support material, storage material and as starting material for other transformations. The invention further concerns a method for producing a foam consisting of at least 70 wt. % of carbon, by pyrolizing synthetic foams. Said method is characterized in that the synthetic foams used contain at least 30 wt. % of a polymer material having a nitrogen content higher than 6 wt. %, and having a porosity between 20 and 99 %, as well as a percentage of open cells higher than 1 %.

Abstract: Fireproof flexible polyurethane foam is made from a mixture of polyether-ol(s) with an OH number (OHN) of 20-80 and a primary OH group content (OHC) of more than 70%, based on 2-4C alkylene oxides with an ethylene oxide content of less than 25 wt.%, and similar compound(s) with an OHN of more than 30 and an OHC of less than 70%, using melamine as fire retardant. A method for the production of fire-resistant, flexible polyurethane foam by reacting optionally modified polyisocyanates (a) with a polyether-ol mixture (b) and optionally other isocyanate-reactive compounds (c) in presence of water and/or other blowing agents (d), catalysts (e), stabilisers (f), fire retardants (g) and optionally other additives etc. (h). In this method, component (b) comprises (b1) at least difunctional polyether-ol(s) with an OH number of 20-80 mg KOH/g and a prim. OH group content of more than 70%, based on propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide and ethylene oxide (EO), with an EO content of less than 25 wt% based on total alkylene oxide and (b2) polyether-ol(s) based on the same components as in (b1), with an OH number of more than 30 and a prim. OH content of less than 70%, and component (g) comprises melamine, optionally with other fire retardants. An Independent claim is also included for flexible polyurethane foam obtained by this method.

(B) comprises (B1) a 2-8C functional polyetherol based on propylene oxide, butylene oxide and/or ethylene oxide, whereby the ethylene oxide content is greater than 40 wt.% (w.r.t. total alkylene oxide), with an OH-number of 20-80 mg KOH/g and a primary OH group content of greater than 50%, (B2) a 2-6 functional polyetherol based on propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide having an OH number of less than 140 mg KOH/g and (B3) at least one further polyetherol based on ethylene oxide and propylene oxide having a primary OH group content of greater than 25%. (B) contains at least 50 wt.% (B1).
