Abstract: Magnetic recording media comprising a non-magnetic base and, applied thereto, a firmly adhering magnetic coating based on a finely divided magnetic pigment dispersed in a binder which contains at least 50 percent by weight of a special polyurethane elastomer, namely a thermoplastic polyurethane which is soluble in tetrahydrofuran, is free from isocyanate groups and has been manufactured from (A) 1 mole of a hydroxyl-containing polyester having a molecular weight of from 700 to 2,500, (B) from 0.3 to 3 moles of a linear aliphatic diol of 2 to 10 carbon atoms, (C) from 0.05 to 0.4 mole of a triol of 3 to 10 carbon atoms, and (D) from 1.35 to 4.7 moles of a diisocyanate of 6 to 30 carbon atoms, the amount of NCO groups being approximately equivalent to the amount of OH groups of the sum of components (A) to (C).

Abstract: In the prodn. of polyurethane (I) solns. from organic di-isocyanate(s) (II) opt. contg. minor amts. of triisocyanate, polyhydroxy cpd(s). (III) with an ave. mol. wt. of 400-500 and opt. a chain extender (IV) with a mol. wt. of 62-400 and a min. of 2 NCO-reactive H atoms/mol. in the presence of organic solvent(s) for (I), which is inert towards (II), (III) and (IV), the ratio of NCO-reactive H atoms in (III) + (IV) to the NCO gps. in (II) being 1:0.95-1, the NCO gps. still present in the (I) soln. after reaching the desired fianal viscosity are reacted with an excess of a prim. and/or sec. monoamine and then the residual monoamine is bound by addn. of a monoisocyanate. The solns. can be used for all purposes requiring solns. of constant viscosity and accurate reproducibility of the props. of the prodt., e.g. as binder for magnetic tape coatings, leather finishes, plastics lacquers and metal coatings and also for the prodn. of cast films etc. (I) solns. with reproducible and regulable viscosity are obtd.

Abstract: Crosslinkable coating compsn. contains (A) an ester diol of formula (HO-CHR-CR2R3-COO-CHR4-CR5R6-CHR7-OH (I) (where R1 to R7 can be H or 1-4C alkyl and R2 with R3 and R5 an dR6 can also be linked to a 5-8C cycloalkyl ring, provided gps. R1 to R3 and R4 to R7 each contain 2 alkyl gps.), having mol. wt. 204-500, or a mixt. of (I), provided component (A) is liquid below 35 degrees C, and (b) a polyisocyanate. Proportions of (A) and (B) are such that equiv. ratio -NCO:OH gps. is 0.7:1 to 1.3:1. The compsns are used for coating metals, wood or plastic substrates, e.g. by spraying, brushing on, immersion or airless spraing. Compsns. have low viscosity, good sprayability and form hard, glossy coatings.

Abstract: Butanediol-(1,3-3-mono-(3'-hydroxybutyrates) have formula R2-CH2-CHOH-CHR'-COO-CH(CH2R2)-CHR'-CH2OH (I) (where R' and R2 are opt. same and denote an aliphatic gp. or H). (I) are prepd. by reacting 3-hydroxy-butanols of formual R2-CH2-CHOH-CHR'-CHO (II) for >=2 hrs. at 40-150 (40-130) esp. 90-130 degrees C. (I) are starting materials for prepn. of polyesters, esp. those partic. stable to saponification, polyurethanes, plastics and plasticisers (I) react with fumaric acid or maleic anhydride for 8 hrs. at 180-200 degrees C to form polyesters which copolymerise with 30 wt. % styrene to non-saponifiable, water-repellant resins, suitable as swimming-pool lacquers, outdoor paints and weather-resistant wood-varnishes. (I) can be esterified, in 1:2 mol. ratio with (meth) acrylic acid to form bifunctional monomers for synthesis of radiation-hardenable lacquers, e.g. on wood, plastics, paper, metals, in combination with unsatd. polymers e.g. epoxides, polyesters, (I) can also form cross-linkable coating compsns.

Abstract: A process for coating electrically conductive objects comprising A. immersing said object as the anode of an electric current in an aqueous polyurethane dispersion prepared by (1) forming a polyurethane solution by reacting an organic polyisocyanate in the presence of an organic solvent with (a) an acrylic ester diol having a molecular weight of between 146 and 3,000; (b) an organic polyhydroxyl compound other than (a) having a molecular weight between 400 and 5,000 selected from the group consisting of polyester, polyols, polyether polyols, polycarbonates, polylactones, and mixtures thereof; and (c) a chain extender selected from the group consisting of diols, triols, diamines, aminoalcohols, having a molecular weight between 62 and 400, water, and mixtures thereof; (2) forming an anionic polyurethane addition product by reacting said polyurethane solution with a mercaptocarboxylic acid salt in the presence of a solvent; (3) adding water; and (4) removing the organic solvent, and B. passing an electric current between the anode and a cathode which is also dispersed in said dispersion, and C. irradiating said object with ultraviolet radiation or electron rays. The process can be used for coating metals such as iron, steel and aluminum.
