Abstract: The invention relates to a method for modifying acid group containing polymers by reacting, at temperatures of up to 250 DEG C, a) polymers that contain polymerized into them at least 5 wt.- % of a monomer that contain monoethylenically unsaturated acid groups, that have a molecular weight ranging between 200 to 100.000 and that are obtainable by radical polymerization of monoethylenically unsaturated acids, optionally in the presence of another monoethylenically unsaturated monomer in an aqueous solution in the presence of at least 4 wt.- %, based on the monomers used for the polymerization, of a water-soluble sulfur composition in which the sulfur has the oxidation number +4, with b) unilaterally end-group terminated polyalkylene glycols, alkylpolyalkyene glycolamines or the mixtures thereof. The invention also relates to the mixtures of at least one of said compounds with up to 30 wt.- %, based on the mixtures, of ammonia, amines, alcohols, hydroxycarboxylic acids or aminocarboxylic acids.

Abstract: A method for producing water-soluble polymers containing polyalkene glycol ether side chains and molar masses of 15 000 16 000, by solution polymerization of esters of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and unilaterally end-group terminated polalkene glycolene,optionally together with other monomers in at least one hydrocarbon having a concentration of monomers of 70-95 wt. % in the presence of polymer initiators forming radicals and optionally polymerization modifiers at temperatures of up to 200 DEG C, and by the removal of the solvent used for solution polymerization and dissolution of the polymer in water in solutions of 50-80 wt. %, wherein polymers containing acid groups are optionally neutralized.
