Abstract: The invention concerns a process for preparing phthalides of general formula (I), in which R , R , R and R , independently of each other, designate hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl or C1-C4 alkoxy, by the hydrogenation of phthalic acid anhydrides of general formula (II), in which the groups R , R , R and R have the above meanings, by means of hydrogenating catalysts. The preparation of pyrrole derivatives of formula (I) comprises catalytic dehydrogenation of pyrrolidines of formula (II) a 150-300 degrees C and 0.01-50 bar on a catalyst comprising: (1) a composite (30-100 wt.%) comprising either (i) palladium on a rare earth or Group IVB metal oxide or (ii) platinum and palladium on alumina or a rare earth or Group IVB metal oxide; and (2) alkali(ne earth) metal oxide (0-70 wt.%). R -R = H, 1-12C alkyl or 3-12C cycloalkyl.

Abstract: This invention concerns a catalyst, particularly for selective production of aromatics from a hydrocarbon stream with straight-chained, branched or cyclic alkyl or alkylene chains, of 6 to 12 carbon atoms. On an oxide of a transition metal of group IVB of the periodic table, such as TiO2 or ZrO2, this catalyst contains at least one element from the VIIIth secondary group, such as palladium, platinum, rhodium, rhenium or tin, and, optionally, a compound of alkali or earth alkali metals, a compound from the third major or secondary group, or zinc, or at least one compound from the sulphur, tellurium, arsenic, antimony or selenium group. The invention also concerns the use of this catalyst for producing aromatics, such as ethyl benzene or xylolene from C6 to C12-hydrocarbons.
