Abstract: A composition comprises a copolymer containing N-hydroxymethyl groups in free or etherified form and an acid cure catalyst which is a mixture of one or more acids having a dissociation constant of more than 10-2 and one or more acids having a dissociation constant of 10-5 to 10-2. The amides are preferably acrylamide and methacrylamide and the etherifying alcohols are preferably C1-C8 alcohols, C2-C6 b -alkoxy ethanols or benzyl alcohol. The stronger acid may be perchloric acid, hydrogen bromide, hydrogen chloride, p-toluenesulphonic acid, or pyrophosphonic acid. The weaker acid may be formic or acetic acid. The exemplified polymer is a copolymer of the n-butyl ether of N - hydroxymethyl - methacrylamide, acrylic acid, butanediol monoacrylate, styrene and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. The compositions are suitable for coating, moulding, impregnating and laminating and may contain solvents and pigments.ALSO:Steel sheet is sprayed with a solution comprising a copolymer containing N-methylol groups in free or etherified form and an acid cure catalyst which comprises a mixture of (1) an acid having a dissociation constant greater than 10-2 and (2) an acid having a dissociation constant between 10-5 and 10-2. Acids (1) are perchloric acid, hydrogen bromide, hydrogen chloride, p-toluenesulphonic acid, and pyrophosphoric acid. Acids (2) are formic or acetic acid. The exemplified polymer is a copolymer of the n-butyl ether of N-methylol methacrylamide, acrylic acid, butanediol monoacrylate, styrene and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate applied in a mixture of butanediol, toluene, xylene, and butanol. The catalyst system is a mixture of perchloric acid and acetic acid and the composition also contains titanium dioxide. The applied coating is heated to cross-link.

Abstract: Sheet-like reinforced materials consisting of A. a core layer comprising a sheet-Like textile structure, preferably a glass fiber mat, B. a plastic matrix composed of a nylon which has been polymerized under alkaline conditions and penetrates both the core layer and the surface layer or layers, are produced batchwise by the RIM method or continuously on a double-belt press by impregnating the sheet-line textile structure and the foam sheets with a lactam melt and polymerizing the latter. The reinforced material can be used for the production of finished articles having a satisfactory surface, for example for the automotive or aircraft industry.

Abstract: Stable water glass solutions are obtained (A) by mixing a solution of an aqueous alkali silicate solution and alkali hydroxide with a tertiary amine and subsequently oxyalkylating the resultant two-phase reaction mixture with at least one alkylene oxide in such an amount that a uniform solution forms or (B) by oxyalkylating a tertiary amine with at least one alkylene oxide and mixing the resultant reaction mixture with a solution of an aqueous alkali silicate solution and alkali hydroxide. The stable water glass solutions are suitable for the preparation of organo silicate foams. For the preparation of the organo silicate foams, a mixture of the stable water glass solutions and tertiary amino group-containing polyether polyols is reacted with organic polyisocyanates in the presence of catalysts, blowing agents and optionally auxiliaries and additives.

Abstract: PROCESS FOR THE PREPARTIAON OF FLEXIBLE POLYURETHANE FOAMS INVOLVING THE USE OF AROMATIC MONOAMINES The invention relates a process for the preparation of a polyurethane foam by reacting an organic polyisocyanate, polyol, and primary or secondary aromatic monoamine in the presence of a blowing agent and catalyst. The amines are used in quantities of 0.1 part to 4 parts by weight per 100 parts per weight of polyol. The highly elastic polyurethane flexible foams are suited for the manufacture of upholstered furniture, matresses, automobile seats and head supports, as well as particularly for molded foams. The semi-rigid polyurethane foams are used as foam backing of dashboards in automobiles, thermal and sound insulation in buildings and vehicles, and for impact absorption in packaging materials.
