    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain uniform vertical line width by providing an ion generator, an exit channel, modulating electrodes, and a switch, and making a data voltage level lower than a strobe voltage by array gates. CONSTITUTION: A high potential is applied to a wire 14 in a conductive chamber 12 to generate ions by corona discharge, and they are attracted to a grounded wall. Transport fluid containing ions passes above an array of modulating electrodes 36 on a head 32 when passing through the exit channel 26. The ions are brought under the influence of the electrode 38 of a power source 40 having the opposite polarity from a corona generating potential source 16 and a charge receptor 42 collects the ions on the surface in the shape of an image. When the potential of the modulating electrodes 36 is selectively controlled, corresponding ions are emitted from a housing 10 or stopped according to the pattern and intensity of light and dark points of the image to be reproduced to make a binary display. Each modulating electrode 36 is provided with an FET switch and the data voltage of a source electrode is made lower than the stroke voltage of a gate electrode to prevent a leakage, i.e., the lost of a vertical line. A data voltage lower limit is set to a voltage at which ions are not cut off completely. Consequently, the generated image can be given uniform and consistent vertical lines.
