    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve dual mode wireless data communications. SOLUTION: A dual mode mobile unit is arranged to communicate in either a first or second data communications standard, such as combined Bluetooth and 802.11 operation. An interface unit converts received Bluetooth or 802.11 format signals into 802.11 frame format data signals to be provided to a digital signal processor which is programmed to process signal in either standard. The dual mode mobile unit can operate in the 802.11 standard to reserve a time interval for Bluetooth activity during which other 802.11 units will avoid transmissions to avoid interference.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coexistence technique which is used for frequency coordination between two different network protocols, such as the IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth protocols, operating in proximity with one another. SOLUTION: Coordination is accomplished by the use of a first radio transceiver operating in accordance with a first communication protocol (which may be the 802.11 protocol) and using a frequency band (which may be the 2.4 GHz band), a base station connected to a wired network and operating in accordance with the first communication protocol, a second radio transceiver operating in accordance with a second communication protocol (which may be the Bluetooth protocol) and using the frequency band, and a coordinator associated with the base station for, in turn, activating the first radio transceiver, deactivating the first radio transceiver, activating the second radio transceiver, and deactivating the second radio transceiver.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the size and the weight of a component used for collection of reflected light by providing an integrated optical element, which includes a beam forming part and beam bending part made one-piece and a light collection part which collects reflected light to lead it to a detector, to scan and move a light beam. SOLUTION: A light beam 16 from a semiconductor laser 18 passes through a plastic lens 20 and is turned at 90 deg. by total reflection in a prism 22. It is emitted from the prism 22 and passes through an aperture 24 in a collection mirror 26 and strikes on an oscillatory scanning mirror 28. Then, an exit light beam 30 for scanning is generated and is led to indicia to be read. Reflected light 32 from a mark is first received by the oscillatory scanning mirror 28, and this mirror 28 leads it to a concave 34 of the collection mirror 26. The concave 34 focuses light on a photo detector 40 through an aperture 36 and a filter 38. The output signal of the photo detector 40 is supplied to proper electronics in a printed circuit board 14 by electric coupling 42.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide an improved ergonomics-design hand-held data inputting terminal device for reading such a display as the bar code symbol. CONSTITUTION: A hand-held data inputting terminal device 10 is provided with a housing 12 and a scanning head 18 which is attached to the housing 12 so that the head 18 can make pivoting motions at least between first and second reading positions. During operation, the head 18 optically scans an encoded symbol and, at the same time, detects the light reflected from the encoded symbol while the head 18 is at the first or second reading position. The user of the terminal device 10 can use either one of first and second trigger switches attached to the housing 12 as a scanning head actuating switch and the other trigger switch as a shift key for deciding the form of characters inputted from alphanumeric data inputting keys on a key pad 16 fitted to the housing 12 together with an LCD display 14.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a digitizer for a bar code reader for detecting the edge of a bar code symbol, and measuring the strength of each detected edge by providing a sensor means, means which outputs a timing signal, and decoder means. CONSTITUTION: A digitizer circuit 30 receives an analog signal, and transmits a timing signal 32 and an edge direction signal 34 for each edge detected from this signal. This timing signal 32 and the edge direction signal 34 are allowed to pass through a decoder which operates the processing of a multiple threshold value in single scanning using a software routine. The software routine judges the direction of the edge by the signal 34, and judges the timing of the edge by the signal 32. The software routine judges the relative strength of the continuous edges by using the relative width of each timing pulse. In this case, a decoder algorithm is made many different threshold values in single scanning.
