Abstract: Calibration is provided for a diffuser panel (30) on board a spacecraft (10) employed in measuring the intensity of sunlight reflected from subjects on the earth. The calibration is accomplished by comparing the intensity of solar radiation reflected from the panel with the intensity of the solar radiation incident directly from the sun. The comparison is obtained by directing both radiation into an integrating sphere (60) through separate ports (62, 64) which are sized to admit substantially equal amounts of power of the reflected and the direct radiations. A detector (76) detects an average value of intensity of the reflected radiation while the direct rays are excluded by a shutter (94). Upon an opening of the shutter and a deflecting of the diffuser panel from the calibrating position, the detector detects the average value of radiation intensity from the direct rays of the sun. The detected values of the radiation intensities may be transmitted back to earth, or are stored in memories 108 and 110 of a computer 100, and then applied to an arithmetic unit 114 to produce the calibration ratio which is then made available for transmission with imaging data back to the earth.

Abstract: Optical characteristic measuring systems and methods such as for determining the color or other optical characteristics of teeth are disclosed. Perimeter receiver fiber optics preferably are spaced apart from a source fiber optic and receive light from the surface of the object/tooth being measured. Light from the perimeter fiber optics pass to a variety of filters. The system utilizes the perimeter receiver fiber optics to determine information regarding the height and angle of the probe with respect to the object/tooth being measured. Under processor control, the optical characteristics measurement may be made at a predetermined height and angle. Various color spectral photometer arrangements are disclosed. Translucency, fluorescence, gloss and/or surface texture data also may be obtained. Such methods and implements may be desirably utilized for purposes of detecting and preventing counterfeiting. Low cost and small form factor spectrometers, and methods for manufacturing the same, also are disclosed.

Abstract: Solar radiation is concentrated onto an absorber which includes a concentrator element. The concentrator element concentrates incident solar radiation in a focal spot on the absorber to obtain a measurable variable which reliably characterizes the alignment of the concentrator element on the sun. The variable is independent of variations in the apparent position of the sun, weather influences, thermal expansion, and play in the suspension of the concentrator element. The device measures the flux density of the solar radiation in the region of the focal spot using an inlet opening, through which part of the solar radiation passes, a diffuser for reducing the flux density of the solar radiation, and a detector for measuring the flux density which is reduced by the diffuser.

Abstract: A system for measuring radiation in the laboratory or at a site to aid in determining whether to erect a solar energy installation at that site includes a positioner and a sensor. The sensor, which is mounted on the positioner, includes a rotating semispherical chopper and an integrating sphere for collecting radiation in three modes. A broad-band detector measures the irradiance from the integrating sphere to monitor for anomalies. A pair of monochromators simultaneously measure, one in the visible range and the other in the infrared range, the spectral irradiance from the integrating sphere. Processing electronics process the measured spectral irradiance from the monochromators and generate data signals for providing an absolute irradiance spectra at the plane of the entrance aperture. The absolute irradiance spectra is inputted to an X-Y plotter and a magnetic disc and tape. The system further includes internal reference sources providing continuous wavelength and irradiance calibration.

Abstract: A flux averaging sphere having an improved efficiency and a high averagingnd diffusing effectiveness over the visible and ultraviolet ranges. The interior surface of the sphere is coated with a white diffusing material which has a higher reflectance for visible radiation than for ultraviolet radiation. A radiation converting means is disposed inside the sphere for converting incoming ultraviolet radiation to visible radiation before reflections from the sphere wall occur. The radiation converting means is transparent to incoming visible radiation which therefore remains unaffected. The efficiency of the device is further improved by eliminating the small gap between the output area of the sphere and the face of the photomultiplier tube. The sphere is formed with a tapered tubular extension at the output area and the face of the photomultiplier tube is abutted against the end of the extension thereby forming a substantially light tight seal.
