Apparatus for coating the endmost threaded section of a pipe with corrosion resistant powder coating material by rotating the pipe and spraying the section to be coated with electrostatically charged, air-entrained powder through two stationary nozzles, one of which is directed at the section to be coated, and the other of which is directed at the chamfered end of the pipe. To prevent overspray of the powder from contacting the pipe adjacent to the area to be coated, a pair of air nozzles are directed at the area of the pipe adjacent to the area to be coated.

An expendable substrate which in use contacts molten metal, for example a foundry mould or core or ladle lining, is coated with a coherent layer of refractory particles by tribo-electrically charging refractory particles coated with an organic binder, the coated particles having an electrical resistivity of at least 10.sup.10 ohm. cm. at 10kv, earthing the substate and bringing the charged particles into contact with the earthed substrate. Suitable binders are thermoplastic resins, thermosetting resins and waxes and the quantity of binder in the binder coated particles is usually less than 10% by weight.

In the electrostatic coating of workpieces with a coating installation in which material sprayed from a grounded rotary sprayer is electrically charged in the corona-discharge area by external electrodes inducing a corona-current to the sprayed material, the danger of the spraying device coating itself is reduced if the corona-current is adjusted to a predetermined value.

An electrostatical powder coating method and apparatus therefor, in which an auxiliary electrode is disposed in the vicinity of a desired coating surface of an object to be coated, a gun for performing electrostatically powder coating is directed to the object to be coated and the auxiliary electrode, a DC electric field is formed between the gun, the auxiliary electrode and the object to be coated, the auxiliary electrode is electrically charged to the same polarity as the gun so as to form an auxiliary electric field between the auxiliary electrode and the desired coating surface of the object to be coated whereby a powder coating material is transferred to be applied onto the desired coating surface by the electric field.

A method for applying rubber-to-metal adhesives to metal parts, such as tubular metal sleeves, employs electrostatic disc-type coaters includes the employment slow solvents which maintain the adhesive in a wet or liquid condition from its atomization at the disc to its deposition on the parts. The adhesives are diluted with a solvent which contains cyclohexanone and petroleum solvents.

Method and apparatus for charging powdered particles and delivering only these charged particles to a workpiece. A high voltage electric field is created between upper and lower surfaces. Powder is continuously delivered to the lower surface. The lower surface is vibrated to bounce the particles so that each repeatedly contacts the lower surface and picks up an electrostatic charge with each contact. When the charge from the particle is great enough to overcome gravity, the particle levitates and is thereafter transported to a workpiece, where it adheres by electrostatic attraction. Three important features of this method are: (1) No uncharged particles are levitated to the workpiece, thereby eliminating the need for recirculating uncharged powder. (2) The method is capable of producing high throughput of charged particles. (3) The method is capable of producing powder with a controlled charge level.

An electrostatic powder spray coating method and apparatus for producing evenly coated continuous films of thermoplastic and thermosetting powders on substrates or parts having electrically conductive geometric complex surfaces and enables the use, without the occurrence of "cobwebbing," of significantly higher charging voltages for the spray gun in the spray coating of preheated substrates and parts, thus allowing faster coating lines. The invention features the use of a grounded electrically conductive ring for grounding the ionized field in the powder discharge region of the spray gun.

Method and apparatus are provided for electrostatically spray coating an article in a coating zone with a liquid coating material, such as paint, wherein air is supplied to the spray head of an air spray gun at an atomizing air flow rate in excess of 5 CFM and at a delivery pressure of less than 15 psi to atomize the liquid coating material. At this combination of relatively low pressure and relatively high volume of air the transfer efficiency is substantially higher than for conventional air spray guns. A turbine unit filters and heats the air so that the air has a temperature in excess of 70.degree. F. at the spray head. An elongated conductive rod is reciprocably supported within a nozzle of the spray head to create an electrical charge differential between the atomized liquid coating material and the article in the coating zone when charged by a high voltage source. Preferably, the rod is positioned within a liquid discharge orifice of the nozzle to alternatively open and close the nozzle. Also, preferably, the air flow rate at the spray head is in the range of 5-35 CFM, and the air delivery pressure at the spray head is in the range of three to nine psi over atmospheric pressure.

A method of forming an impact-resistant, moisture impermeable coating on the surface of an object, such as a pipe, comprises heating the object to a temperature above which a thermosetting resin applied to the heated surface will fuse, so that the resin forms a continuous layer. Before the layer of resin has gelled, a second layer consisting of a finely divided particulate mixture of the resin and a solid such as glass fiber or mica is applied over the first layer. The two layers are fused together to form a homogeneous resin covering with one layer reinforced by the above solid. The resin coating is then cured and the object allowed to cool. An apparatus for carrying out the method is also described.

An open-topped casting mold and a mating cover are electrostatically coated with a powder screen and casting material is poured into the mold without disturbing the powder by holding the powder in position with static electricity. The casting material is permitted to harden and a screen of powdery or fatty material placed on the upper surface of the hardened material and protective film applied over the screen.
