    Abstract: A non-contact type dental shade matching device is provided, comprising a camera body for capturing image of one or more target teeth; an opaque intra-oral compartment snugly adapted for a human mouth; an opaque cover shield body connected between the camera body and the intra-oral compartment; one or more holders for holding one or more shade tabs; and a color matching module being operably connected to the camera body to receive the captured images containing color and translucency information of the target tooth and/or shade tab information, and then to process the images based on a content-based algorithm for automatic shade matching between the target tooth and the shade tabs for each of the captured images, so as to achieve an optimal dental prosthesis.

    Abstract: Methods in a spectral measurement apparatus are disclosed. Light is received with a plurality of sensors. Each sensor generates an output signal having a frequency proportional to an intensity of light received by the sensor. First, second and third signals are generated each having a frequency proportional to an intensity of light received by a sensor of a wavelength or spectral band. A spectral characteristic of the received light is determined based on at least the first, second and third signals, which are are coupled to a processing element and input in parallel. The spectral characteristic is determined based on measuring a frequency or period of the at least first, second and third signals. Spectral data based on the determined spectral characteristic is generated by the processing element and displayed on a display device for perception by a viewer or transmitted to a data interface for transmission to an electronic device external to the spectral measurement apparatus.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating a color mapping for a dental object. The method includes generating a transformation matrix according to a set of spectral reflectance data for a statistically valid sampling of teeth. Illumination is directed toward the dental object over at least a first, a second, and a third wavelength band, one wavelength band at a time. For each of a plurality of pixels in an imaging array, an image data value is obtained, corresponding to each of the at least first, second, and third wavelength bands. The transformation matrix is applied to form the color mapping by generating a set of visual color values for each of the plurality of pixels according to the obtained image data values and according to image data values obtained from a reference object at the at least first, second, and third wavelength bands. The color mapping can be stored in an electronic memory.
