Abstract: Method of making an article are described comprising providing a substrate and forming a surface treated porous layer on a surface of the substrate. The porous layer comprises sintered inorganic oxide particles. A surface of the porous layer comprises a hydrophobic layer. The method further comprises impregnating a lubricant into pores of the surface treated porous layer. Also described are articles, comprising (a) a substrate; (b) a surface treated porous layer disposed on a surface of the substrate, wherein the surface treated porous layer comprises a plurality of sintered inorganic oxide particles arranged to form a porous three-dimensional network, and a hydrophobic layer disposed on a surface of the porous three-dimensional network, and (c) a lubricant impregnated in pores of the surface treated porous layer.

Abstract: A method of forming a polysiloxane film on a substrate comprises polymerizing a siloxane monomer in a reaction chamber containing the substrate. The polymerization is catalyzed by a 30-60 W radio frequency plasma, the pressure in the reaction chamber during the polymerization is 100-400 mTorr, the residence time of the siloxane monomer in the reaction chamber is 5-120 minutes, the siloxane monomer is heated to 30-200° C. before entering the reaction chamber, and the polymerization is carried out at a temperature of 30-100° C.

Abstract: An article with controllable wettability includes a substrate and a layer of a composite material supported on the substrate. The layer has an exposed surface and the composite material includes particles that have controllable polarization embedded fully or partially in a matrix. A controller is operable to selectively apply a controlled variable activation energy to the layer. The controllable polarization of the particles varies responsive to the controlled variable activation energy such that a wettability of the exposed surface also varies responsive to the controlled variable activation energy.

Abstract: A method for depositing a coating includes creating a vacuum within an interior volume of a tubular structure, wherein the tubular structure also includes an internal surface. Gas is supplied to the interior volume of the tubular structure, wherein the gas includes a plasma precursor in the gas phase. The tubular structure is biased relative to ground. Plasma having a density is formed and cyclically positioned along the length of the tubular structure. Positive ions of the plasma precursor gas are generated and are deposited on the internal surface forming a coating on the internal surface, wherein the coating exhibits a water contact angle of greater than 120°.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for the production of a superhydrophobic film, surface or material comprising the steps of: (i) providing a composition comprising a hydrophobic substance and a hydrophilic solvent, the hydrophilic solvent being a liquid at a temperature of 25° C. and atmospheric pressure; and (ii) spraying the composition towards a substrate for deposition of a solid residue onto the surface of the substrate for generation of the superhydrophobic film, surface or material; wherein the temperature of the composition is higher that the temperature of the substrate when carrying out step (ii).
