The invention generally relates to methods and devices for synchronization of ion generation with cycling of a discontinuous atmospheric interface. In certain embodiments, the invention provides a system for analyzing a sample that includes a mass spectrometry probe that generates sample ions, a discontinuous atmospheric interface, and a mass analyzer, in which the system is configured such that ion formation is synchronized with cycling of the discontinuous atmospheric interface.
Abstract:
An ion source is disclosed comprising a nebulizer and a target. The nebulizer is arranged and adapted to emit, in use, a stream of analyte droplets which are caused to impact upon the target and to ionize analyte to form a plurality of analyte ions. The target is vibrated by a piezo-electric vibration device to reduce the size of resultant secondary droplets.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a method and device to generate a chemical signature for a mixture of analytes. The present invention involves using a SPME surface to one or both absorb and adsorb the mixture of analytes. In an embodiment of the invention, the surface is then exposed to different temperature ionizing species chosen with appropriate spatial resolution to desorb a chemical signature for the mixture of analytes.

Processing a capillary distal end into acute-angle, an electrophoretic liquid passing hole through which electrophoretic liquid pass is opened in a flexible insulating plate. An electrodialysis-membrane is bonded covering the electrophoretic liquid passing hole; the capillary is securely bonded to the insulating plate portion with no gap therebetween, the portion excluding electrophoretic liquid passing hole on the electrodialysis top-membrane. A crack forms at the capillary portion at the electrophoretic liquid passing hole, with the capillary entirely secured to the insulating plate except portion at the electrophoretic liquid passing hole. The capillary is securely bonded to the insulating plate; reservoir stores electrophoretic liquid on the insulating plate-side to which the capillary is unsecured. An electrode insertion hole into which an electrode is inserted opened in the reservoir upper portion; the electrode is securely inserted into the electrode insertion hole. By this, high-sensitivity measurement is using a spray device for sheathless CE-MS.
Abstract:
Devices, systems and methods including a spray chamber are described. In certain examples, the spray chamber may be configured with an outer chamber configured to provide tangential gas flows. In other instances, an inner tube can be positioned within the outer chamber and may comprise a plurality of microchannels. In some examples, the outer chamber may comprise dual gas inlet ports. In some instances, the spray chamber may be configured to provide tangential gas flow and laminar gas flows to prevent droplet formation on surfaces of the spray chamber. Optical emission devices, optical absorption devices and mass spectrometers using the spray chamber are also described.

The invention relates to an ionization chamber for connection to a mass spectrometer. The ionization chamber has a temperature-control block with a gas inlet and a gas channel which starts at the gas inlet and leads into a gas outlet. A temperature-control device is positioned along the gas channel and ensures that a gas flowing in the gas channel is brought to a specific temperature, i.e. it is heated or cooled, before it enters the ionization chamber. The temperature-control block has a formed part into which a structure of the gas channel is incorporated and which is fabricated by means of a sol-gel process, for example out of a glass or ceramic material.

A mass spectrometer is disclosed comprising a separation device arranged and adapted to emit an eluent over a period of time. The separation device preferably comprises a Capillary Electrophoresis (“CE”) separation device. The mass spectrometer further comprises a nebuliser and a target. Eluent emitted by the separation device is nebulised, in use, by the nebuliser wherein a stream of analyte droplets are directed to impact upon the target so as to ionise the analyte to form a plurality of analyte ions.
Abstract:
Systems and methods for delivering a sample to a mass spectrometer are provided. In one aspect, the systems and methods can provide efficient cooling of an ion source probe to prevent overheating and the resulting degradation in ion sampling. In some aspects, such cooling can result in improved consistency and/or efficiency of ion formation. Moreover, ion source cooling in accordance with various aspects of the present teachings can allow for the use of higher temperatures in the ionization chamber (thereby improving desolvation) and/or can enable the use of lower flow rate sample sources than with conventional techniques.

Provided herein are apparatuses that can comprise an electrospray emitter comprising a sample capillary extending from a sample inlet to a sample outlet and an element comprising a conduit coaxially disposed around the electrospray emitter thereby forming a chamber extending between the conduit and the sample capillary and terminating in a gas outlet. The element can further comprise, in some examples, a carrier gas inlet fluidly connected to the chamber, and a working gas inlet fluidly connected to the chamber, wherein the chamber is configured to provide a path for fluid flow from the carrier gas inlet and the working gas inlet to the gas outlet. Also disclosed herein are methods of use of the apparatuses. In some examples discussed herein are methods and apparatuses for contained-electrospray, for example for use in mass spectrometry and/or droplet reactions.
