Abstract: A system for a high resolution optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) using various optical configurations to reduce polarization dependent loss (PDL) is disclosed. The system may include a birefringent element to receive an input optical beam. The birefringent element may then split the optical beam into at least two exit beams. The system may also include an optical configuration comprising at least one optical element. The optical configuration may receive the at least two exit beams from the birefringent element and transform at least one of the two exit beams using the at least one optical element to provide two parallel beams with parallel polarizations. The optical configuration may then output the two parallel beams with parallel polarizations to a downstream optical element, such as a diffraction grating, or other optical element.

Abstract: An imaging assembly of a spectral imaging ellipsometer includes an analyzer configured to polarize reflected light reflected from a sample surface, an imaging mirror optical system disposed on an optical path of the reflected light passing through the analyzer and including a first mirror having a concave surface and a second mirror having a convex surface, and a light detector configured to receive light passing through the imaging mirror optical system to collect spectral data. The reflected light is firstly reflected by the first mirror, the firstly reflected light is secondarily reflected by the second mirror and travels toward the first mirror again, and then thirdly reflected by the first mirror to be imaged on a light receiving surface of the light detector.

Abstract: A device, and corresponding method, can include a pump light source configured to irradiate a target specimen. The device can also include a sensor configured to observe a probe speckle pattern based on light from a probe light source reflected from the target specimen. The device further may include a correlator configured to determine a material property of the target specimen by analyzing changes in images of the probe speckle pattern as a function of the irradiation with the pump light source. Advantages of the device and method can include much higher sensitivity than existing methods; the ability to use visible probe wavelengths for uncooled, low-cost visible detectors with high spatial resolution; and the ability to obtain target material properties without detecting infrared light.

Abstract: A liquid-crystal variable retarder has first and second liquid-crystal cells with respective first and second thicknesses, the second thickness being less than the first thickness. A feedback sensor provides a feedback signal indicative of a retardance of the liquid-crystal variable retarder. A controller is coupled to the feedback sensor and the first and second liquid-crystal cells. The controller is operable to apply a first signal to the first liquid-crystal cell based on a target retardance trajectory and a feedforward control model. The controller applies a second signal to the second liquid-crystal cell based on the feedback signal and the target retardance trajectory.

Abstract: A camera concurrently produces an orthographic map and map spectral content. Illumination from an image passes through a phase modulator and the resulting rotating photo-flux phase is converted to an electrical signal by multiple adjacent sensors of detectors of array of detectors. The amount of unwanted illumination reaching the sensors is reduced by a set of baffles that shield and protect the transducers from unwanted out-of-field light and other light sources.

Abstract: An optical device includes a waveplate sandwiched between first and second polarizers and is arranged to receive light emanating from an object or object image that is in motion relative to the optical device. A detector array includes one or more detector elements and is optically coupled to receive light from the second polarizer. Each detector element of the detector array provides an electrical output signal that varies according to intensity of the light received from the second polarizer. The intensity of the light is a function of relative motion of the object or the object image and the optical device and contains spectral information about an object point of the object.
