Abstract: An optical element for light concentration for a predefined wavelength range, includes a holding sleeve which is formed in such a way that a light passage volume is framed by at least one reflective partial surface of the holding sleeve, and a light transmission element, with which the light passage volume is at least partly filled and which is transmissive, at least for the predefined wavelength range. The light transmission element is at least partly formed from at least one medium that is diffuse for the predefined wavelength range, and has at least one first subregion having at least a first diffusivity and a second subregion having at least a second diffusivity differing from the first diffusivity. The disclosure further relates to a method for producing an optical element for light concentration.

Abstract: Aspects relate to a compact material analyzer including a light source, a detector, and a module including a first optical window on a first side of the module, a second optical window on a second side of the module opposite the first side, and a light modulator. The light source produces input light at a high power that is passed through the first optical window to the light modulator. The light modulator is configured to attenuate the input light, produce modulated light based on the input light, and direct the modulated light through the second optical window to the sample. The modulated light produced by the light modulator is at a lower power safe for the sample. The detector is configured to receive output light from the sample produced from interaction with the modulated light through the second optical window and to detect a spectrum of the output light.

Abstract: A hand held spectrometer is used to illuminate the object and measure the one or more spectra. The spectral data of the object can be used to determine one or more attributes of the object. In many embodiments, the spectrometer is coupled to a database of spectral information that can be used to determine the attributes of the object. The spectrometer system may comprise a hand held communication device coupled to a spectrometer, in which the user can input and receive data related to the measured object with the hand held communication device. The embodiments disclosed herein allow many users to share object data with many people, in order to provide many people with actionable intelligence in response to spectral data.

Abstract: Example embodiments relate to detectors for detecting electromagnetic radiation. One embodiment includes a detector for detecting electromagnetic radiation spanning a range from a first wavelength to a second wavelength. The detector includes an array of funnel elements for propagating electromagnetic radiation from a second plane towards a first plane. Each of the funnel elements includes an entrance end and an exit end. The entrance ends of the array of funnel elements define the second plane. The entrance end is larger than half of the second wavelength in a medium from which the electromagnetic radiation enters the detector. The exit end is smaller than half of the first wavelength of in the medium. The detector also includes an array of photosensitive elements for detecting electromagnetic radiation incident on the array of photosensitive elements. Each funnel element is associated with a photosensitive element. The array of photosensitive elements defines the first plane.

Abstract: A device for determining the surface topology and associated color of a structure, such as a teeth segment, includes a scanner for providing depth data for points along a two-dimensional array substantially orthogonal to the depth direction, and an image acquisition means for providing color data for each of the points of the array, while the spatial disposition of the device with respect to the structure is maintained substantially unchanged. A processor combines the color data and depth data for each point in the array, thereby providing a three-dimensional color virtual model of the surface of the structure. A corresponding method for determining the surface topology and associate color of a structure is also provided.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a display with a cover layer. An ambient light sensor may be aligned with an ambient light sensor window formed from an opening in a masking layer on the cover layer in an inactive portion of the display. To help mask the ambient light sensor window from view, the ambient light sensor window may be provided with a black coating that matches the appearance of surrounding masking layer material while allowing light to reach the ambient light sensor. The black coating may be formed from a black physical vapor deposition thin-film inorganic layer with a high index of refraction. An antireflection layer formed from a stack of dielectric layers may be interposed between the black thin-film inorganic layer and the display cover layer.

Abstract: A device and method for identifying solid and liquid materials use near-infrared transmission spectroscopy combined with multivariate calibration methods for analysis of the spectral data. Near-infrared transmission spectroscopy is employed within either the 700-1100 nm or the 900-1700 nm wavelength range to identify solid or liquid materials and determine whether they match specific known materials. Uses include identifying solid (including powdered) and liquid materials with a fast measurement cycle time of about 2 to 15 seconds and with a method that requires no sample preparation, as well as quantitative analysis to determine the concentration of one or more chemical components in a solid or liquid sample that consists of a mixture of components. A primary application of such analysis includes detection of counterfeit drug tablets, capsules and liquid medications.

The first surface faces the electronic display panel and receives light from pixels of the electronic display panel. The second surface emits a combined version of the light received by the first surface.
