Abstract:
The present invention relates to functional fluid compositions containing antioxidants, and specifically stable compositions containing antioxidants with limited solubility in and/or limited compatibility with the functional fluids with which they are used. In particular the present invention deals with functional fluids used in internal combustion engines, such as engine oils, and antioxidants containing a phenolic or benzoic group, where the antioxidant is present in the functional fluid composition at levels that would otherwise cause the composition to be unstable and/or hazy.

The use of tetrahydrobenzoxazines I where R1 is a hydrocarbyl radical and R2, R3, R4 and R5 are each independently hydrogen atoms, hydroxyl groups or hydrocarbyl radicals, and where R2 to R5 may also form a second and a third tetrahydrooxazine ring, with the proviso that at least one of the substituents has from 4 to 3000 carbon atoms and the remaining substituents, when they are hydrocarbyl radicals, each have from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, as stabilizers for stabilizing inanimate organic material, especially turbine fuels, against the action of light, oxygen and heat.

A method for increasing removal of drag reducer additive (DRA) from liquid hydrocarbon fuel. The method comprises producing contaminated liquid hydrocarbon fuel comprising a concentration of removable DRA comprising a quantity of one or more polar groups, and contacting the contaminated liquid hydrocarbon fuel with an amount of one or more removal agents under removal conditions effective to produce a reduced concentration of the removable DRA.
Abstract:
Emissions of pollutants from diesel engines are reduced by a combination of mechanical devices and fuel additives. In one series of embodiments, diesel emissions of NO.sub.x and particulates are reduced, simultaneously with gaseous hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, by the combined use of exhaust gas recirculation or engine timing modification, with a particulate trap and a platinum group metal catalyst composition. In another embodiment, a multi-metal catalyst composition, comprising a combination of a platinum metal catalyst composition and at least one auxiliary catalyst metal composition, especially cerium or copper, is employed to provide catalyst metal to the exhaust system including a diesel trap to lower the balance point of the particulate trap (the temperature at which the rate of trap loading equals the rate of regeneration) while also lowering the emissions of carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons. Data for platinum, copper and cerium catalysts establishes effective amounts. Tests also show selective maintenance of low oxidation of SO.sub.2 to SO.sub.3.

A two component additive and a liquid hydrocarbon based fuel composition, containing the additive are disclosed. The fuel composition is comprised of a major amount of a liquid hydrocarbon diesel fuel and a minor fuel efficiency improving amount of the additive. The additive is composed of: (A) an overbased transition metal salt of a carboxylic acid; and (B) a compound represented by the general formula II: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently hydrocarbyl. The additive may include a third component (C) which is a hydrocarbon-soluble ashless dispersant. The dispersant (C) is preferably a derivative of a substituted succinic acid wherein the hydrocarbyl substituent is derived from a polyalkylene characterized by a Mn value of about 500 to about 10,000 and a Mw/Mn value of about 1.0 to about 4.0.

A method of inhibiting the deposition of paraffin wax, asphaltene, or mixtures thereof in a crude oil contaminated with paraffin wax, asphaltene, or mixtures thereof and susceptible to such depositions comprising the step of incorporating into said crude oil an effective deposition inhibiting amount of an oil soluble organic compound having at least one oleophobic and hydrophobic fluoroaliphatic group, and antideposition stabilized crude oil compositions containing said compound, are disclosed.

A fuel composition for internal combustion engines, and more particularly, a fuel composition for internal combustion engines containing less than about 0.5 gram of lead per liter of fuel is described. The fuel composition comprises a major amount of a liquid hydrocarbon fuel and a minor, property improving amount of(A) at least one hydrocarbon-soluble alkali or alkaline earth metal-containing composition, and(B) at least one hydrocarbon-soluble ashless dispersant.When a mixture of the metal-containing composition (A) and the ashless dispersant (B) are incorporated into gasolines containing less than about 0.5 gram of lead per liter of fuel, the treated fuel exhibits improved stability and water tolerance, and when the unleaded or low lead-containing fuels of the present invention are utilized in internal combustion engines, there is a significant reduction in valve seat recession. Methods of reducing valve seat recession in internal combustion engines utilizing lead free or low lead-containing fuels also are described.

An improved composition for fueling an internal combustion engine equipped with at least one carburetor which comprises a major amount of hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline boiling range, a minor amount of at least one detergent, and a minor amount of mineral oil of lubricating viscosity comprising at least about 50% by weight of aromatic hydrocarbons having an average molecular weight in the range from about 300 to about 700 the detergent and oil both being present in the composition in amounts sufficient to inhibit formation of deposits on the carburetor.An improved method for fueling such an engine using the composition described above is also disclosed.
