Abstract: A thermal separation process for the separation of at least one (meth)acrylic monomer enriched material stream from a (meth)acrylic monomer containing mixture comprises use of a device having separate volume elements in which the liquid temperature does not differ by more than 2 degreesC and the total residence time is no greater than 20 hours. A thermal separation process for the separation of at least one (meth)acrylic monomer enriched material stream from a (meth)acrylic monomer containing mixture, comprising the continuous stationary operation of at least one thermal separation device comprising at least one separating chamber optionally containing inserts to which at least one (meth)acrylic monomer containing stream is removed whereby the material stream that is fed to the separator chamber contains x wt.% of components that are different to (meth)acrylic monomers; the material stream having the highest content by weight of (meth)acrylic monomers that is removed from the separator chamber contains y wt.% of components that are different to (meth)acrylic monomers whereby the ratio x:y is at least 5; the separator chamber, excluding inlets and outlets is bordered by a solid phase, comprises at least one recirculating heat exchanger and has a liquid phase filled total volume of at least 1 m3 whereby the temperature of the liquid phase is at least 80 degreesC; and is characterized by subdivision of the separating cavity into n individual volume elements whereby the highest and lowest temperature in the liquid phase within the separate volume elements does not differ by more than 2 degreesC; the total residence time is as defined by equation (1) and is no greater than 20 hours. tges = integral(i=1 to n) msi/mi x 2A (1) To = 100 degreesC; Ti = the arithmetic mean value of the highest and lowest temperature in i volume elements; msi = the total mass of (meth)acrylic monomers in i volume elements containing liquid phase; mi = the total liquid phase mass flow from i volume element. The total amount of liquid phase contained within dead-volume elements is not greater than 5 wt.% of the total liquid phase within the separator chamber.

Abstract: Process for the separation of crystals from suspension in a mother liquor comprises addition of the suspension to a wash column having a wall enveloping a process chamber. The wall is of metal and the face away from the process chamber is heated along at least the length of the purified melt zone. A process for the separation of crystals from suspension in a mother liquor comprises: (a) addition of the suspension to a wash column having a wall enveloping a process chamber, (b) feeding of the suspension to the process chamber to form a bed of crystals in the chamber and (c) conveying of the bed of crystals in the process chamber by means of gravity with a counter current flow of a purified melt of the crystals to form a wash front such that the bed of crystals is partitioned into a mother liquor zone and a purified melt zone. The wall is of metal and is heated on the face away from the process chamber along at least the length of the purified melt zone.

Abstract: Providing a process for the production of methacrolein from isobutane. A process for the production of methacrolein from isobutane comprises: (A) partial, selective, heterogeneously catalyzed dehydrogenation of isobutane in the gas phase in a reaction zone (A) to form a mixture of isobutene and unreacted isobutane; (B) transport of the gas mixture to a reaction zone (B) followed by a selective heterogeneously catalyzed partial oxidation with molecular oxygen in the gas phase to form a methacrolein containing product mixture; (C) the methacrolein in the product mixture from (B) is either used for the production of methacrylic acid or other purpose and the non-reacted isobutane is either recycled to reaction zone (A) or used for another purpose and is characterized in that the molar ratio of molecular oxygen to molecular nitrogen is 1:1-1:10.

Abstract: Production of propionic acid (or its ester) from acrylic acid (or its ester) comprises: (1) partial dehydrogenation of propane to give a mixture (A); (2) partial oxidation of propylene in (A) to form a mixture (B); and (3) hydrogenation of the acrylic acid in (B) (directly and/or after esterification) to form a mixture (C). At least part of the hydrogen used in step (3) is that formed in step (1). Production of propionic acid (or its ester) from acrylic acid (or its ester) comprises: (1) heterogeneously catalyzed partial dehydrogenation of propane in a first reaction zone, to give a product gas mixture (A) containing molecular hydrogen, propylene and unconverted propane; (2) charging the propylene in (A) to a second reaction zone, in which the propylene is subjected to selective, heterogeneously catalyzed partial gas phase oxidation with molecular oxygen to form a product gas mixture (B) containing acrylic acid; and (3) charging the acrylic acid in (B) (directly and/or after esterification) to a third reaction zone, in which the acrylic acid (or ester) is hydrogenated with molecular hydrogen to form a product gas mixture (C) containing propionic acid and/or its ester. At least part of the hydrogen used in step (3) is that formed in step (1).

Abstract: Acrolein and acrylic acid are produced from propane and propene by absorption/desorption of propane and propene from a gas mixture followed by oxidation, in which no heterogeneously catalyzed dehydrogenation of propane occurs between the desorption and oxidation stages without addition of oxygen. Acrolein and acrylic acid are produced from propane and propene by: (a) separation of propane and propene from a gas mixture (A) by absorption in an absorption medium; (b) separation of propane and propene from the absorbent to give a mixture (B) containing propane and propene; and (c) using mixture (B) for oxidation to the required product(s). In this process, no catalytic dehydrogenation of propane without the addition of oxygen is carried out between stages (b) and (c).
