Abstract: Prepn. of butenediols and butenediol ethers of formula (I) and formula R3O-CH-C(R1)=C(R2)-CH2-OR4 (II) comprises reaction of vinyl-oxiranes of formula (III) with water and/or 1-10C alcohols at 0-250 deg.C in the absence of catalyst. R1, R2 = H or 1-5C alkyl, R3 = R4 = H or one of these gps. = H and the other = 1-10C alkyl or hydroxyalkyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - 2-Butene-1,4-diol is useful for the prodn. of butane-1,4-diol and 1-butene-3,4-diol is useful as an intermediate in the prodn. of vitamin A, the diol ethers are useful as crosslinkable diols for the prodn. of polyurethanes and polyesters. This process gives (I) and (II) in high yield and with high selectivity (such that the yield of the vitamin precursor (I) far exceeds that of (II)) and without the high cost involved in sepn. of catalyst (contrast prior-art processes). (I) and (II) are easily sepd. by fractional distn.

Abstract: In an improved process for preparing caprolactam by heating 6-aminocaproic acid, an ester or amide or mixture thereof in the presence of an inert reaction medium which is liquid under the reaction conditions and has a boiling point above that of caprolactam, the improvement comprises using as the reaction medium a hydrocarbon, maintaining a temperature of from 150 DEG to 350 DEG C., charging the 6-aminocaproic acid, ester, amide or mixture thereof at a rate commensurate with their rate of conversion, and separating caprolactam from the reaction mixture at a rate commensurate with its rate of formation.

Abstract: Prodn. of 5-formylvalerate esters (I) is carried out by : (a) hydroformylation of pentenate esters (II) with CO and H2 at elevated temp. and pressure in the presence of carbonyl complexes (III) of gp. VIII metals, to give a mixt. (IV) of 5-, 4- and 3-formylvalerate esters; (b) sepn. of (I) from (IV), leaving a mixt. (V) of 4- and 3-formylvalerate esters; (c) catalytic cracking of (V) at 50-400 deg. C, to give (II), which (d) are recirculated to stage (a). In stage (a), the Co concn. is pref. 0.05-0.3 mole-% w.r.t. (II), the (II) conversion is 10-50% and the temp. 60-160 deg. C. In stage (c), the catalyst pref. contains gp. VIII metal(s) and pref. is a supported catalyst contg. at least 2 gp. VIII noble metals or at least one gp. VIII noble metal plus Fe, Co and/or Ni. Pref. it may also contain Cu, Ag, Zn, Ti, V, Cr, Mo, W, Mn and/or Re. Cracking is carried out at 60-350 deg. C in (gas contg.) O2, pref. with a (V):O2 molar ratio of 1:0.05-3 and opt. in a diluent, esp. water and/or 1-6C alkanol(s).
