Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a preventive for skin aging, capable of preventing and improving symptoms caused by aging of skin, by including a mercaptopropionamide derivative. SOLUTION: This medicine comprises a mercaptopropionamide derivative of the formula (R is H or acyl; R is H or a hydrocarbon; R is H, carboxyl, an alkoxycarbonyl, a hydrocarbon, a heterocyclic or an acyl; (n) is 1-20) or its salt as an active ingredient. The medicine is further formulated with an ultraviolet absorber and/or an ultraviolet controller to preferably prepare a skin preparation for external use. The formulated amount of the compound of the formula in the case of preparing a skin preparation for external use is preferably 0.0001-5 wt.% based on the whole composition. The compound of the formula has inhibitory action on a metal-dependent elastin decomposing enzyme and is capable of effectively controlling change caused by aging of skin such as occurrence of wrinkle and slackening and reduction in tension.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in high yield with industrial advantage by carrying out the two-phase reaction comprising the aqueous phase and the organic phase, when 3-alkylflavanone derivative is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide. SOLUTION: (A) 3-Alkylflavanone derivative of formula I (R is a 1-12C alkyl; R and R are each a halogen or 1-12C alkyl which may be substituted with a 1-12C alkoxy group, H, hydroxy group, cyano, a halogen) is oxidized with (B) hydrogen peroxide. In this reaction, a two phase system of an aqueous phase and an organic phase or a three phase system of an aqueous phase, an organic phase and a solid phase is used to prepare (C) a 3-alkylflavanol derivative of formula II. The aqueous phase and the organic phase preferably comprises water and an organic solvent immiscible with water, for example, n-propanol, n-butanol, toluene, xylene, acetone or the like. Thus, a compound that is useful as a hair-growing or hair tonic agent can be produced with industrial advantage.

The daily oral dose thereof is preferably within the range of 10-300mg for an adult administered in one to several divided portions when administering the active ingredient as a medicine to a human.

The extract is preferably obtained by adding 100g of dry crashed material of Hamamelisvirginiana L. with 1000ml of 50v/v% ethanol aqueous solution, extracting it for 3 days at room temperature while it is stirred at intervals, subsequently filtering the extraction mixture, allowing the filtrate to stand at 5 deg.C for 3days and filtering this solution again to obtain a clear filtrate. Further, the above wrinkle-suppressing agent is preferably incorporated with a component selected from an anti-inflammatory agent such as glycyrrhizic acid, an extract of one of various kinds of plants other than Hamamelisvirginiana L., a singlet oxygen-removing agent and an antioxidant since this enhances the wrinkle-suppressing effect.
