    Abstract: The optical fibre sensor measures the Doppler shift of dispersed laser light using a quasi-elastic light scattering principle, where the light is dispersed by incidence with moving particles. The exit face (7) for the laser light is provided at the end of a monomode or multi mode optical fibre (3) acting as an immersion probe, with an angle of between 0 and 15 degrees and pref between 1 and 6 degrees between the optical axis (8) of the optical fibre (3) and the normal (9) to the exit face (7). Pref. the dispersed light is fed back to the optical fibre (3) via the exit face (7) for coupling to a detector (12), pref. with an associated signal processing circuit.

    Abstract: Propylene polymers (I) contain a matrix of propylene homopolymer and a copolymer of propylene and other alkenes. The novelty is that the polymers satisfy certain condition(s) when separated by tacticity and comonomer distribution of the polymer chain. They are first dissolved in boiling xylene, then the solution is cooled to 25 degrees C at a rate of 10 degrees C/hour. The polymers are separated, into fractions of different solubility at increasing temperature, whilst the matrix remains undissolved on heating the cooled solution to 80 degrees C. The conditions are that the amount of matrix remaining undissolved on further heating is (i) > 20 wt.% at 112 degrees C; (ii) > 8 wt.% at 117 degrees C and/or > 1 wt.% at 122 degrees C. Also claimed are (1) a method of producing (I); and (2) films, fibres or mouldings made from (I).

    Abstract: Polymers of vinylaromatic cpds. are prepd. at 0-150 deg C, in presence of a catalyst system comprising (A) at least 2 different metallocene complexes and (B) a cpd. forming metallocenium ions. Pref. the aromatic cpds. have formula (I) (where R = H (pref.) or 1-4C alkyl; R -R = H (pref.), 1-12C (1-4C) alkyl (pref.), or halogen (pref. Cl), or 2 adjacent gps. together form a 4-15C (4-12C) cyclic gp., or Ph, biphenyl, naphthalene or anthracene). The components are metallocene complexes formula (II) (where R -R = H, 1-10C alkyl, 5-7C cycloalkyl (opt. carrying 1-6C alkyl gps. as substits.), 6-15C aryl or arylalkyl, or 2 adjacent gps. form together 4-15C cyclic gps., or Si(R )3; R = 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl or 3-10C cycloalkyl; M = metal or 3rd-6th sub-gps. or of the lanthanide series (pref. metal of 4th sub-gp.); Z -Z = H, halogen (Pref.), 1-10C alkyl (pref.), 1-10C alkoxy (pref.), 6-15C aryl or 1-15C aryloxy; z1-z5 = 0-5; z1+z2+z3+z4+z4+z5 = valency of (M - 1)). (B) The components are open-chain or cyclic alumoxan cpds. of formulae (R )(R )Al-(O-Al(R ))mR (III) or (IV) (where R = 1-4C alkyl; m = 5-30). The polymers are used to produce mouldings (claimed). Use is esp. in electrical and high temp. resistant applications. A simple process gives syndiotactic polymers with wide distribution of mol.wt. The polymers have mol.wt. 10000-10000000 (50000-1000000) and Mw/Mn of 5-100.
