Abstract: The invention relates to acrylate polymers comprising a K-value ranging from 10 to 60, which can be obtained by the radical polymerization of: 30 to 99 w t. % of tert-butyl acrylate and/or tert-butyl methacrylate designated as monome r A; 1 to 28 wt. % of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid designated as monom er B, and; 0 to 60 wt. % of a radically copolymerizable monomer or of a radical ly copolymerizable monomer mixture designated as monomer C, whereby at least on e of monomers C yields a homopolymer with a glass-transition temperature lower than 30 ~C, with the provision that the wt. %'s total 100. The radical polymerization is carried out in the presence of alkane thiols with a C chai n length of C 14 to C 22. The invention also relates to acrylate polymers comprising a K-value ranging from 10 to 60, which can be obtained by the radical polymerization of: 30 to 99 wt. % of tert-butyl acrylate and/or tert - butyl methacrylate designated as monomer A; 1 to 28 wt. % of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid designated as monomer B, and; 0 to 60 wt. % of a radically copolymerizable monomer or of a radically copolymerizable monomer mixture designated as monomer C, whereby at least one of monomers C yields a homopolymer with a glass-transition temperature lower than 30 ~C, with the provision that the wt. %'s total 100. The invention also relates to the use of these acrylate polymers as film formers as well as to their use in cosmetic preparations.

Abstract: Cosmetic compositions containing special cationic polymers and cationic and/or non-ionic thickeners, in which the polymers are obtained by the radical copolymerization of acrylic monomers, N-vinyl-lactams, amine-containing monomers and optionally polyalkylene oxide-containing silicone derivatives. Cosmetic compositions containing cationic polymer(s) and cationic and/or non-ionic thickener(s) in a cosmetically acceptable medium. The polymers are obtained by radical copolymerization of: (a) 50-70 wt.% monomer(s) of formula (I); (b) 5-45 wt.% monomer(s) of formula (II); (c) 5-40 wt.% mono-unsaturated comonomer with amine-containing group(s); and (d) 0-5 wt.% polyalkylene oxide-containing silicone derivative: X = O or NR ; R = H or 1-8C alkyl; R = tert.-butyl, or 2-22C alkyl; n = 1-3. An Independent claim is also included for a method for fixing or shaping a hairstyle by using these compositions.

Abstract: Colorant-containing aqueous polymer dispersions comprise (all amounts by wt. of polymer matrix): (A) (i) a polymer matrix based on an ethylenically-unsaturated monomer (M); and (ii) an organic colorant comprising a dye or pigment, UV-absorber or optical brightener uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix (0.5-50%); (B) a nonionic surfactant (0.1-20%); and (C) an amphiphilic polymer with 0.5-10 mol./kg anionic-functional groups (1-50%). An Independent claim is also included for preparation of the dispersions by: (i) dissolving the colorant in monomer M, (ii) emulsifying the mixture to give a conventional oil-in-water emulsion, (iii) homogenizing to give a mini-emulsion with monomer droplets of average diameter below 1,000 nm and then (iv) polymerizing the mini-emulsion in presence of a soluble free-radical initiator together with (B) (0.1-20 wt.%) and (C) (1-50 wt.%), each wt. being based on the wt. of M.
