Abstract: A method of passivating etched mirror facets of semiconductor laser diodes for enhancing device reliability. The etched mirror facet is first subjected to a wet-etch process to substantially remove any native oxide as well as any surface layer which may have been mechanically damaged during the preceding mirror etch process. Then, a passivation pre-treatment is applied whereby any residual oxygen is removed and a sub-monolayer is formed which permanently reduces the non-radiative recombination of minority carriers at the mirror facet. Finally, the pre-treated mirror surface is coated with a passivation layer to avoid any environmental effect on the mirror.

Abstract: A method, and devices produced therewith, for improving the flatness of etched mirror facets (18) of integrated optic structures with non-planar stripe waveguides (17) such as ridge or groove diode lasers or passive devices like modulators and switches. The curvature in the mirror facet surface, occurring at the edges of the waveguide due to topographical, lithographical and etch process effects, that causes detrimental phase distortions, is avoided by widening the waveguide end (23) near the mirror surface (18) thereby shifting the curved facet regions away from the light mode region (24) to surface regions (29) where curvature is not critical.

Abstract: Data from a computer are supplied to a pattern generator and represent the shape to be produced. The origin coordinates and incremental steps are signalled to a digital-analog converter. The resulting signals are supplied to the electron beam deflection coils (19,21) following amplification (29). A detector determines a signal representing the rate of electron back-scattering. The signal is amplified and applied to a multi-level range coder. The corresponding level signal is applied to a stepping rate selector which produces a corresponding stepping rate correction which corresponds to the signal level. This is converted to an ac voltage for application to a VCO controlling the beam stepping rate signal for the pattern generator.

Abstract: An arrangement for separating disturbing ambient light from an optical data signal, comprising an interference filter (1), the passband of which matches the wavelength of the optical data signal, and further comprising two photodiodes which are so arranged that one photodiode receives the light (IS, IAT) transmitted through the interference filter, and that the other receives the reflected light (IAR). Adjusting means, e.g., in the form of a settable aperture (4) or an additional simple filter (5) are provided for adjusting the transmitted and reflected portions of the ambient light to each other. Output signal (S1, S2) of both photodiodes are subtracted from each other in compensation circuitry (6). This results in compensation of the ambient light components so that at the output a signal (SR) is available which depends only on the actual data signal (IS).

Abstract: For the multiplex transmission of coded speech signals in periodic frames, single segments (blocks of coded samples) are selectively suppressed for redundancy reduction, and are replaced on the receiver side by optimally correlated subsections of equal length from previously transmitted segments. On the transmitter side, a multiplicity of compare operations are made for each speech signal, between the respective newest coded segment and a step wise shifted subsection window of previous segments, to determine the best correlated subsection, i.e. the one which is most suitable as replacement and the respective relative offset and correlation. From a group of speech signals, the one signal, or several signals, having the best correlation is selected for suppression of a segment before transmission. Instead of each missing segment an indication of the corresponding optimum offset is transmitted in the frame header. In the receiver for each speech signal a few previous segments are kept in storage from which then, with the aid of the received offset indication the optimally suited subsection can be selected and used as replacement.

Abstract: A METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MONITORING THE ON/OFF-HOOK STATUS OF A TELEPHONE SET In an extension line circuit, an off-hook condition is detected during ringing by superimposing in each ringing cycle the values of the line current existing at two sampling instants exactly one-half cycle apart, and testing whether the sum (or mean value) exceeds a given threshold. When DC current starts flowing due to the set going offhook, the mean value of the two values will pass a threshold. Sample pulses can be derived in common for all line circuits from positive-going zero crossings of the ringing supply signal. The circuit acts as a notch filter centered exactly at the actual frequency of the ringing signal.

Abstract: A microsystem switch ( 1, 20, 25, 30, 33 ) has a support ( 2 ) defining a recess ( 3 ), and a flexible bridge ( 6 ) is mounted on the support ( 2 ) bridging the recess ( 3 ). The bridge ( 6 ) is shaped so as to hold selectively a concave stable state, in which the bridge bulges into the recess ( 3 ), and a convex stable state in which the bridge bulges out of the recess ( 3 ). The switch includes an actuator ( 8, 9; 26, 27 ) for effecting flexing of the bridge ( 6 ) between the stable states, and a switching element ( 7, 31, 34 ) is mounted on the bridge ( 6 ) such that movement of the bridge between the stable states moves the switching element between an on position and an off position. According to another design, a microsystem switch ( 40, 55 ) has a support ( 41 ) defining a recess ( 42 ), and an elongate torsion member ( 44 ) is mounted on the support ( 41 ) bridging the recess ( 42 ). A flexible bridge ( 43, 56 ) is mounted on the support ( 41 ) bridging the recess ( 42 ) in a direction substantially perpendicular to the torsion member ( 44 ). The bridge ( 43, 56 ) is connected to the torsion member ( 44 ) at the cross-point thereof so that a first section of the bridge extends between the cross-point and one side of the recess ( 42 ) and a second section of the bridge extends between the cross-point and the opposite side of the recess ( 42 ). The bridge ( 43, 56 ) is shaped so as to hold selectively a first stable state, in which the first section of the bridge bulges into the recess and the second section of the bridge bulges out of the recess, and a second stable state in which this configuration is reversed. A switching element ( 45 ) is mounted at the cross-point of the bridge ( 43, 56 ) and torsion member ( 44 ), and an actuator ( 46 a, 46 b; 58 a, 58 b) is again provided for effecting flexing of the bridge ( 43, 56 ) between the stable states. Here, movement of the bridge ( 43, 56 ) between the stable states effects twisting of the torsion member ( 44 ) and rotation of the switching element ( 45 ) between an on position and an off position. Switching devices incorporating these switches, and switching apparatus comprising arrays of such switching devices, are also provided.
