Abstract: The distillative sepn. of material mixts. into their pure components comprises using a distn. column contg. complete or part packing of ordered or unordered sepn. elements. Between a boiler and a condenser, rising steam and falling fluid come into intimate contact, and through the resulting mass transfer the lower boiling components are obtd. in the condenser and the higher boiling ones in the column reboiler. In the column, an uneven distribution of the liq. scrubbing density is aimed for across the column cross section. Also claimed is a device to carry out the above process comprising a distn. column with liq. collectors and redistribution devices. According to the desired liq. scrubbing density in the core as well as the wall region of the column, the arrangement of the outflow openings and/or their dia. are optimised.

Abstract: Production of butan-1,4-diol (I), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and psi -butyrolactone (GBL) involves: (i) oxidation of butane to a product stream containing maleic anhydride (II); (ii) absorption of (II) with a high-boiling alcohol (III), giving a liquid absorption discharge (IV) containing maleic half and diesters and (III); (iii) further esterification of (IV); and (iv) liquid phase hydrogenation of the esterification discharge (V). The novel features are that (III) is a polyol with a boiling point of over 233 deg C at normal pressure; and (V) has an acid number less than 30 mg KOH/g and water content less than 1 wt. %.

R1 = H or an organic group; R2-R4 = H or 1-4C alkyl.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for suspension hydrogenation of an anthraquinone compound of a mixture comprised of two or more anthraquinone compounds in a reactor containing the working solution and the one additional gas phase which contains hydrogen. At least one catalyst is suspended in said working solution. The working solution and the gas phase are at least partially fed into the reactor through a device with openings or channels whose hydraulic diameter is between 0.5 and 20 mm, preferably between 1 and 10 mm, and more preferably between 1 and 3 mm.
