    Abstract: Surface-coating binders based on a copolymer which contains tertiary amino groups and blocked isocyanate groups and is water-soluble or water-dispersible as a result of being at least partially salified with an acid. The copolymer contains, as copolymerized units, an olefinically unsaturated compound which possesses a tertiary amino group, an N-(1-alkenyl)-isocyanate which is blocked with a CH-, OH- or NH-acidic blocking agent, and another olefinically unsaturated compound, with or without one or more copolymerizable olefinically unsaturated compounds which possess hydrogen atoms which are reactive toward isocyanate groups, and has a mean molecular weight of from 1,000 to 20,000. The novel surface-coating binders are used for the cathodic electrocoating of metallic articles.

    Abstract: The parent specification described a lacquer binder for the cathodic electro-dipping lacquering of electrically conducting surfaces comprising a protonated, heat-hardenable reaction prod. (A), free from epoxy gps., prodn. from (a) a Mannich base obtd. from (1) condensed poly-phenol, opt. contg. ether gps., (2) sec. amine (I) contg. 1 hydroxyalkyl gp., or a mixt. of (I) with another sec. amine, and (3) HCHO or a cpd. releasing HCHO, and (b) an epoxy resin. The binder contains 1-40 wt.%, w.r.t. A + B, of (B) a water-insol., nonionic resin, free from epoxy gps. and contg. urethane gps., obtd. by reaction of a partially blocked di- or poly-isocyanate with a polyamidepolyamine with mol.wt. 400-1000 or a reaction prod. of a polyepoxide and not 1 low-mol. cpd. contg. SH and/or OH gps. In this Patent of addn. resin (B) is a capped di- or polyisocyante. Current consumption during electro-lacquering is lower, Fresh coatings have less tendency to redispersion. The binder can be applied at a constant pH of 6.5-10 (7-9). Release of amine during baking is reduced Hard coatings are obtd., resistant to scratching, solvents and salt spray.

    Abstract: Baking finishes of low solvent content, which have a viscosity of from 20 to 300 DIN seconds, measured in a DIN cup No. 4, and comprise from 40 to 85% by weight of hydroxyl-containing polymers, from 10 to 55% by weight of amine/formaldehyde resins and from 5 to 35% by weight of polyisocyanates, and may also contain up to 15% by weight of monohydric or dihydric alcohols, up to 35% by weight of solvents, up to 65% by weight of pigments and fillers and up to 3% by weight of crosslinking catalysts. The finishes are particularly suitable for coating automotive components.

    Abstract: 1. A process for the preparation of polymeric organic acids by copolymerizing monoolefinically unsaturated monofunctional acids and monoolefinically unsaturated monomers, copolymerizable therewith and devoid of acid groups, with or without monoolefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and/or anhydrides which are copolymerizable with the preceding monomers, in the presence of a free radical initiator at elevated temperatures and superatmospheric pressures, wherein the copolymerization is carried out as a continuous mass polymerization using, based on the sum of the monomers, a) from 50 to 95% by weight of one or more of the unsaturated monofunctional acids of 3 to 10 carbon atoms, b) from 0.5 to 5% by weight of one or more of the monomers copolymerizable with a) and devoid of acid groups, and c) from 0 to 49% by weight of one or more of the unsaturated dicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides of 4 to 6 carbon atoms, with the proviso that the percentages of a, b and c add up to 100, in the presence of 0.1 to 5% by weight, based on the sum of a, b and c, of the free radical initiator, at from 200 to 400 degrees C, and the copolymers obtained may, if desired, be completely or partially neutralized.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of polymerizable, primarily linear thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers with acrylate side groups comprising reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a mixture of (a) an acrylate diol having a molecular weight of 146 to 3000, (b) an organic polyhydroxyl compound other than those of paragraph (a) having a molecular weight between 400 and 5000, and (c) a chain extender selected from the group consisting of diols, diamines, aminoalcohols, and triols, having molecular weights between 61 and 400, water, and mixtures thereof wherein the ratio of isocyanate to active hydrogen containing groups is from 0.8:1 to 1.2:1 and wherein 1.4 to 1.8 moles of organic polyisocyante, 0 to 15 moles of component (c) and 0.3 to 6 moles of component (a) are used per mole of component (b). The polymerizable polyurethane elastomers may be used for the manufacture of molded parts, laminates, adhesives, coatings, magnetic tapes, and other articles.
